Seminar Junkie or Success?

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 137

Do I need to go to seminars to become a success?

Success Includes Seminars

I'm not exactly sure when my obsession with improving my life started but it was around the time I went to my first seminar.

I must admit the atmosphere was great. To be surrounded by like-minded people who were obviously seeking answers for their lives, as was I. They wanted to become a success like the people on the stage!

It was a huge arena, you may have heard of it the O2 centre.

Three days of motivational speeches and learning a new approach to life.

This year I have attended four seminars already.

Now don't get me wrong. This was a struggle for me. I had to take time off work and sort out childcare. There was also the issue of travel. Four hours of each day was spent on travelling.

I took notes after notes and listened intently to each speaker. I so desperately wanted to be a success like those on the stage.

Now let's get one thing clear. Motivational speakers and internet gurus do these seminars so they can give out information at the end of their talk about their own products. So there is a sales pitch.

Now personally, I find these seminars an effort to attend but what I get from them is important.

I take notes and try to take in all the information I can. I try extremely hard to talk to people (this is not my strong point) but this can lead to great opportunities and good friendships.

One thing I have found is that people who attend these events are looking for something in their life, the same as you. How many friends do you have that understand the transition in your life? I personally find that none of my friends understand. They become offended when I decline invitations to parties etc. Trying to explain to them that this year I am concentrating on bettering my life, doesn't see to go down too well. They then to try to explain that I need to make a change in my life now, then I will have more time.

The usual reaction I get is they try to persuade me to re-schedule or tell me that I need a break and should take some time off. I would have never become a success if I had listened to my friends.

Your Success Not Your Friends

Any of you that have made the choice to change your life for the best, understand that you have to work at it consistently, and you're excited by the changes you are making. You get up early and go to bed late to make the change possible. The last thing you want is the momentum to be broken. You're on a roll and only you understand that.

Remember it doesn't matter what other people think of you. It does matter of what you think of yourself though. Especially if they don't have you to live your life. If they don't understand then 'tough.'

When I first went to a seminar, I was on the way home on the coach, and one of my work colleagues was on the same coach. We said "Hi" and then I asked him what he had been doing in London. At this point he looked a bit embarrassed and said he had been to an 'event' in London. I explained that I had been to the 'Entrepeneurs Boot camp' and it turned out that was where he had been too. He was ashamed in case I thought he was a bit crazy. It turns out we were both a bit crazy and had attended the same event. The next day we travelled and sat together for the seminar. When we saw each other at work we would giggle because we had a 'secret.' We were both striving for something better.

You have to be a bit crazy; being normal and conforming is not going to get you anywhere in life.

These seminars can be a bit of a shock especially if you're a typical 'British' person and the speaker is from the USA. We tend to be a bit reserved and by the 20th 'high five' and saying 'you're awesome' to your neighbour, you find yourself switching off. Don't allow cultural differences stop you from learning from the speaker. Join in and participate you will be amazed what you will learn about yourself and your reservations could be holding your back.

I was queen of 'high fives' by the time I went home. Of course when you go in the front door of your house you are on a high, and then you are brought back down to earth by family and friends. The best thing you can do is keep up the momentum. Read your notes and put into practice anything you learnt as soon as possible. Don't care what anyone else thinks. It's your life. They won't like it when they see the change in you, but like I said before, they are just scared because you are changing and they will do what they can do to stop you, and leave them behind.

So Will Seminars Help Your Success?

Well in my personal opinion 'yes'. If you come away from the seminar feeling that you belong and you fit in somewhere then this is bound to impact on your life. Just to know that you are not the only person seeking a better life, but the world is full of 'crazy' people like you.

If you relate to the subject and the speaker, then you will learn to understand that the speaker is just a normal person in life, like you, and they have become a success, some thing you 'crave'. This gives you the incentive you need to overcome obstacles and push forward.

Success or Seminar?

One word of warning. If you are attending a lot of seminars for the buzz and coming away and not implementing what you have learnt, then you are wasting opportunities. You are becoming a 'seminar junkie'. You are attending for the feelings it gives you but you can re-create these feelings at home. Just attend what you need to push forward and implement what you learn. You will run the risk of alienating your family and friends, all they will see is you spending money and coming back the same person. Don't you want to be one of the success stories and inspire your friends and family to do the same?
