Spear Fishing in Middle America

March 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

Spear fishing in Middle America is one of its best kept secrets. Most people in Middle America are unaware of the scuba diving opportunities and less aware of the spear fishing adventures. Everyone knows someone or has been on a striper fishing trip but little did they know the same lakes are great for spear fishing as well.

Lake Tenkiller in Oklahoma boasts of the clearest water in the area, but it has great spear fishing too. There are tournaments every year for the competitive spear fisherman. The catfish blend in with the bottom at times and are often found under downed trees and logs that have settled to the bottom. Be careful not to bump the logs or branches because the catfish are sensitive to vibrations. It is fun to look at the big bass but don't stick one because they are protected from the spear fisherman. But if spear fishing isn't your thing the lake is a nice recreational dive for a family weekend with beautiful overhangs that could pass for caves.

Lake Travis Texas has 270 miles of shore line and depths to 200 feet and is the fifth lake in a series of six lakes formed by dams on the Colorado River. Spear fishing is legal but only for non-game fish, carp, drum, shad and others. The water clarity is much better in the spring as is common with most lakes. Make no mistake the fish get big and are fun to hunt. Always get a license and find out what game is legal before going after the prey. Texas laws are very stringent.

There are too many lakes in Arkansas to list that allow spear fishing and there are some lakes where game fishing is permitted but it changes by seasons and dates. Beaver lake is a fun place to spearfish and there are half a dozen places for shore entries, but by law diver down flags are required. The water clarity is good most of the year but water clarity is generally always better in the spring.

It isn't necessary to go to the ocean or some exotic location to enjoy spear fishing or scuba diving. But it is important to have the proper training for all scuba diving adventures. Scuba diving is only safe as each divers training and skill level. Be safe, have fun and take the family and explore under water adventures.
