How to Make Your Dive Gloves Last Longer

February 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 129

Good dive gloves are not cheap. If you indulge in activities like lobster hunting or gold hunting they don't hold up very well. The finger tips wear out, become riddled with holes and lose their ability to keep your hands warm and cut-free.

In this article I will outline an easy procedure to make those gloves last longer. And, you can use it over and over on the same gloves.

First hint; don't let the gloves become damaged before doing this procedure. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure later.

You will need three things in addition to your new gloves:

One, there is a product out there that we all use on our knee pads and wetsuits to repair tears and cuts called Aqua Seal. Obtain some of this product at your local dive store. The product comes in two packages one just the seal material and the other combines it with a bottle of Cotol 240. Cotol-240™ Cleaner & Cure Accelerator is a urethane cure accelerator to be used in conjunction with Aquaseal®. The solvent dilutes the seal material, making it easier to use, and more importantly speeding the tack time to 15 minutes and the full cure time to less than two hours. The combination package it the one you want.

Two, obtain some common sand to use in the procedure.

Three, go to your local hardware outlet and get a couple of those inexpensive, metal handle brushes used to spread flux when you are going to solder copper pipes.

It is best to do the following in a well-ventilated area. The product cures quicker in a warm area.

Put down a newspaper or cloth you don't want to keep, so you don't make a mess. On a piece of paper or cardboard, (try to find some that is not very absorbent) squeeze out an ounce of the Aqua Seal. Mix it with some Cotol so it is nice and runny but not liquid. Mix it with the brush.

Apply this mixture to the tips of the gloves and wait a few minutes (maybe 10). The first coating will probably soak into the glove tips. So, it is a good idea to apply a second coat to the glove tips. Wait 30 - 60 minutes until the mixture is tacky but not set. Dip the glove tips into the sand and let dry about two hours.

If you want you can repeat the procedure to add more sand. However, be careful not to put too much material on the glove tips. Too thick of a layer will make the glove tips stiff and un-flexible.

Now your gloves will give you much better service by lasting longer. Another side effect of this procedure is the gloves will have a better grip. Have fun diving and good hunting.
