How to Make a Career Out of Scuba Diving

March 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 102

If you want to take the first steps to becoming a dive professional, the minimum rating you would need is a Divemaster rating. In most cases, this should be enough to get employed at a dive center or school.

As a divemaster, your duties will include guiding certified divers, assisting instructors on scuba courses, helping around the dive center with daily chores such as tank filling, equipment maintenance, and assisting with other administrative activities.

One caveat remains. As a divemaster, it may be tough to find work in locations containing a lot of qualified instructors.

Many dive centers, though not all, will hire instructors to teach classes and guide certified divers. So the minimum rating you would need to compete in this kind of pool is an instructor rating.

This is especially true in places such as Utila, Honduras and certain parts of Thailand where there are plenty of high-qualified instructors. There is an advantage to hiring an instructor as opposed to a dive master because instructors can not only teach courses but also perform divemaster duties such as guiding certified divers.

The bottom line is, you have a lot more options to choose from as an instructor.

If you decide to look for scuba diving jobs, one of the first things you need to consider is with which dive agency you want to choose. The options include: PADI, SDI, SSI, and NAUI.

Many, if not most, would recommend getting PADI certified as there are a lot more PADI-affiliated dive centers than there are ones affiliate with its competitors.

Moreover, the majority of dive centers will look for PADI-qualified instructors to teach dive courses. As such, individuals with PADI qualifications will have a much easier time finding employment simply due to the fact that there are a lot more dive centers that are PADI-qualified.

Once you've chosen your dive agency and done your training as a divemaster or instructor, you can start looking for work. Jobs will be plentiful depending on the location. As there aren't as many dive centers in metropolitan areas or large cities, jobs will be easier to find in areas with warmer climates and warmer water temperatures.

Locations such as the Keys in Florida, Hawaii, and even California within the US would be a good place to look. If you are willing to relocate, there are plenty of opportunities in the Caribbean - Bonaire, Puerto Rico, Aruba, the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Costa Rica, and many more. The possibilities for diving career options are endless once you start looking.

My interests include reading, knitting, and diving! I've traveled and worked as a dive professional in locations such a Utila, Honduras. During my free time, I like to update my Kindle.
