Script Doctoring

June 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 166

Script doctoring was first revealed to the public in 1973 during the American Academy Awards ceremony when Francis Ford Coppola thanked Bob Towne for his script doctoring for "The Godfather" This introduced a trend that has since been followed by thousands of directors. Doctoring is a specific task of the movie industry. The doctor is a skilled screenwriter hired to rewrite a screenplay or polish it.

Script doctoring is a challenging task for outsiders, since changes may focus on the overall theme, dialogues, characterization of major and subsequent actors and the pacing of the screenplay. Doctoring is also a non-credential task, and successful script doctors may work with several television productions and directors at the same time. However, script doctoring should be differentiated from script consultancy and movie analysis. Script consultants are asked to point out problems they found in a screenplay and eventually suggest solutions. Even though the doctor can do the same, he or she is the only one qualified to rewrite the changes.

Moreover, script doctoring differs slightly provided the professional is hired by a TV producer or by a blockbuster director. The TV show industry systematically uses screenplay doctors that are known as script editors. But in cinema, screenplay doctoring is a part-time task that needs a more qualified professional. Screenplay doctoring requires a deep analysis of scripts that have yet been "green-lit" during previous steps of the film production, namely the development phase. Doctoring intends to attract financiers and cast appropriate actors with perfect characterization. Doctoring is also useful for post production purposes, for example when the director faces narrative difficulties that crop up during the edition phase.

The WGA screenwriting system allows script doctoring professionals to qualify for credits when they contribute up to 50 percent to the screenplay story or characterization. But the majority of screenplay doctors are uncredited, although they are asked to fix up to 15 percent of the screenplay. Moreover, doctoring is usually downplayed to avoid overshadowing the original screenplay, especially when he is famous. Screenplay doctors who are qualified for credits are eligible for the Academy Award for the Best Screenplay. They could also qualify for the Writers Guild America Awards for their exceptional contribution. In many cases, doctoring requires physical retyping skills; the writer is typically provided a digital copy of the existing script.

It is vital to hire a great doctor if you are serious about producing or selling the screenplay. Ask about the potential screenplay doctor's education. Movie screenplay doctoring is a specific skill that usually requires a college education and years of practice screenwriting. Some professional screenplay doctors offer reasonable prices and payment installments. Hire doctoring services to drastically increase the quality of your script.
