Three Steps for Making Time to Scrap

February 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 116

You know the feeling; it's been a long week of running around after the kids, trying to keep the house tidy and getting everyone fed. There has been no "me" time and certainly no scrapping time and IT'S NOT FAIR!!

Well, something has to change and right now is as good a time to implement change as any. Today we will look at the three elements we need to consider in creating time to scrap.

Step one: Time audit

Firstly we need to have an honest look at how we spend our time each week. Considering only one day timespan doesn't allow for our family's flow and ebb of activities. But looking across a week we can pencil in the fixed points and consider what else is needed.

Let's spend 2 minutes looking at where we spend our time. Start with a blank sheet of paper and write the days across the top. Divide the page roughly into three; morning, evening and night. Next, pencil in the fixed events in rough blocks of time; work commitments, kid commitments (driving to school / picking up from school activities) and any other mandatory events. Show whether these take up all day or an hour here and there.

On a second sheet of paper, note the other things that need to be done; cleaning the house, shopping for groceries, paying bills, girls lunch and other activities that will occur across a normal week. Pencil these activities in on our weekly sheet, considering how long you spend on each activity. Think about if these activities need to be done all at once or if they can be broken into smaller time lots.

For example, house cleaning; it will expand into the time available if you are not careful. Do you need 4 hours once a week, or can we find 2 hours at the start of the week and 2 hours at the end of the week and get the same amount of work done?

On our second sheet, list all of the other activities that you do - reading, watching television, computer and internet time. Can you guess how much time you spend on each of these across a week? If you aren't sure, you can do a time audit for a few days and see how much time you are spending on these third tier activities.

Looking at our schedule sheet and (hopefully) a few spare spaces, we move onto the next step

Step two: Permission to scrap

Now that we have a clearer picture of where our time is going each week, we can decide how much time we would like each week and when scrapping time will be. If you are doing this exercise then you have realised that finding time to be creative is important to you. You need to tell yourself that we are creating a plan here to make sure we get some scrapping time on a regular basis and we need to stick to it.

It is okay to feel like we are letting our family down if we spend some time doing what we love but it shouldn't stop us from ignoring the kids for a few hours each week; it may eve help to build their resourcefulness (as long as they are safe, of course). You need to give yourself permission to spend this time. I am a strong believer that a "Happy Mom = Happy Home".

Looking at our weekly plan, can yo see areas where we can pencil in our creative time? Do we have a full day we can free up? Most likely not! Can we fit 2 hours twice a week, plus an evening or two? It mightn't seem like a lot of time at first but 6 hours a week equals 24 each month, which is 288 hours across the entire year. That adds up to a good amount of scrapping time!

When you are happy with a rough plan, let your family know that you have set aside this time and ask for their help as well.

Step three: Reserving a time with your scissors

Now we have an idea when we can get stuck into our scrapping and w need to use our time well. Firstly we need to make sure that we have and actually feel like scrapping.. By reserving a time to scrap in advance, it helps to set our minds to feel ready to scrap when the time arrives.

We also need to break down our projects into smaller steps. This takes some practise when getting started but it will be worthwhile - we are actually getting some project completed. If we have glue or paints that need to be left to dry, do this towards the end of your time, so the drying can occur between scrapping sessions. this means you have the whole session to prepare, crop, edge and organise.

If you are working on a few projects at once, think about how you can separate them so each can be pulled out, worked on and put away again.

And at the end of each scrapping session, spend 60 seconds putting tools and extra materials away; we want our scrapping space to be ready to go next time scrapping time comes around.

So the three steps to finding more scrapping time

know when you can fit in scrapping time and plan your time for the week aheadgive ourselves permission to spend that time scrapping and stick to your planwhen scrapping time arrives, you will already be thinking about your next project, so get scrappin!

Happy scrapping!
