Journaling for Beginners

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 118

Journaling is the words written, such as who, what, why, where and when of the photos you take. Look back at photos from long ago, all you have is the people in the photos; no names, or what they were doing, why they were there, or the date of the photos in the first place. All you have is the photo. With journaling, the words bring to life what the photos are saying. Sometimes you will have a simple photo of a person; you might spend the time making a layout about what that person means to you, or special things they have done. Other times you will have no photos of an event - maybe the camera broke, or something happened to the photos - journaling will bring the event to life with the words you write.

I look back at my Grandma Tuckett's life, and how I don't know as much as I would have liked to have known about her. When you do your journaling, does the words you write - reflect the photos or do you simply write something short like date and names? Will people be able to look at your pages and learn something from what you have been through? Here are a few tips to get you started making your journaling your own:

• Keep a small notebook with you, or close at hand - in order to be able to write down the little things someone says or does that you want to add to your scrapbook pages.

• When you have an event, make sure you have a sheet of paper with the information of the party - date, time, who was there, and save the invitation to put in a pocket on the layout!

• Using your day to day journal for use on your layouts certainly works! Make sure you write down enough information to be able to find it later on!

• Do at least a few layouts in your own handwriting, even if you do not like the way it looks. Future generations are sure to be happy to see it, I know I would love to see something my dad wrote now that he has passed on.

When you start to journal on your pages, look at the area you want to add your journaling to; get a scratch piece of paper and start to write the words you want to say on it. This way, you can make sure you have enough room on the area you are looking at, instead of wasting paper you might not have!

Your basic journaling toolkit:

• Pencil and eraser • Scratch paper • Ruler • Fine tip marker (various colors) • Cardstock

As you start your page, look at the photos in the first place. Maybe it is for a birthday party, or other fun event such as this. Here are step by step directions on how to add your basic journaling to your pages:

Step one: Decide where your journaling is going to go on your layout.Step two: Using a piece of lined paper or scratch paper, start to write your words in the same size area as what you will need on your layout.Step three: Cut a piece of cardstock to size from the above step.Step four: Take a ruler and lightly trace lines on the cardstock to put your words (unless you are good at writing straight). Write your words lightly as well.Step five: Take a marker and go over the words, making sure you have spelled everything correctly.Step six: Take an eraser and erase the lines and pencil marks on the creation, making sure to do this after the marker has dried.Step seven: Add to your layout, matting with another coordinating color before you put it on your layout.

**Tip** If you happen to screw one side up on the journaling piece (misspelled a word or something), simply turn it over and do it on the other side!Learn to enjoy your journaling, it's the reason you should be scrapbooking in the first place!
