Figuring Out How Big Your Albums For Scrapbooking Need to Be

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 126

There are so many different types of albums that are available to someone who wants to start to scrapbook. How do you start to decipher between each of them, and learn what size of album you need yours to be? Everything depends on YOU - the creator of the album there is no wrong or right answer, it is all in what is best for you and the project you want it to be!

If you are just starting out scrapbooking, I would begin by using a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 format, depending on the project and what you have available to you! I like the 6 x 6 version because you can cut a sheet of 12 x 12 cardstock twice and actually have 4 different pages for every sheet of paper, using 5 sheets total for a 20 page album plus the paper to highlight it with. Working on a smaller album such as these, makes it so the area you are creating with isn't as overwhelming as with the larger sizes. Plus you can do a theme in a day with a little bit of work up front planning as to how you want the project to look like.

With smaller albums such as this - as you do get more into this craft, you can always make an album for someone as a present - something handmade is always special to those receiving! If you end up taking a ton of pictures for an event, you might want to consider something such as these sizes - as it then makes the event a bit more special when people look at the album. You can always make smaller albums and then put them in a basket on a coffee table - or shelf on your bookcase, for people to look at when they want to! Albums are meant to be shared after all!

You can also do mini albums that are smaller than the 6 x 6 size - for those, look at what you have available to you in your local area. Online you can also find resources for shopping, check out my blog for plenty of places I recommend or at least that you can start with! Check their clearance sections often for what they might have - and put things on a wish list to send to your friends and family. This way you get the perfect items for what you are planning on doing when someone wants or needs to get you a gift, just send them your "wish list"!!!

As you get more in to this craft, you will want to do either 8.5 x 11 or 12 x 12 albums - which are both great for different reasons just like the smaller albums! If you want to have more photos on your pages, you will end up with fewer albums. If you end up doing small albums based on a theme - you could end up with hundreds of smaller albums! However, if you add to your smaller projects a few larger ones, you get a great balance between the two!

Some of the themes you can start to use:

ABC Album

Baby

Heritage

Friendship

Recipes

Family Events

Holidays

Travel

School

Pets

Favorite scriptures or quotes

All about me

Inspirational quotes or sayings

Influential people

Individual child

Tribute

My favorite things

Top 10 lists

Random memories

Life announcements from family and friends

Yearly

As you start to look at what size of albums you want to do - look at what is available to you. If you want to use one size, and it's harder or too expensive to get - then you might need to redo your way of thinking a little - or find a cheaper way to do things with what you have available.

Here are a few tips when deciding on your album:

• 1 - 2 photos would go on a 1 page layout 8.5 x 11

• 3 - 6 photos would go on a 2 page layout 8 x 5 x 11

• For every 3 - 4 photos, add a page

• 1 - 3 photos would go on a 1 page layout 12 x 12

• 4-8 photos would go on a 2 page layout 12 x 12

• For every 3 - 4 photos, add a page

• Mini albums can have as many photos as you would want, depending on the size of the photos themselves and the project you are working on.

• 8 x 10 photos and certificates would want to be scrapped in a 12 x 12 format if you want a bit of paper and embellishments added.

• Not every mini album needs to have photos - or not every page anyway - learn to use your journaling with mini albums more!

I hope this helps to understand about albums a bit more! There truly is no wrong or write way - I do so many sizes - it just depends on the project itself. However - if you have OCD - you might want to plan more...if you are a free spirit - and really, it's just "whatever" then have fun finding "whatever"!
