History of Satellite Television

March 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 140

Satellite television plays a significant role in our everyday lives. You may not realize how beneficial this technology really is but it has dramatically improved with the way we live and information today. Satellite television began with the launch of the first satellites into space. The origin of the satellite dates back to 1957, when the Russians launched Sputnik 1. Sputnik 1 was an artificial satellite that transmitted the first communications from space. The success of Sputnik 1 was the beginning of the space age. In response to Sputnik 1 the United States President Eisenhower said, our response called the shock the "Sputnik Crisis." The crisis, ignited the space race between Russia and the United States during the cold war. A significant event like the Sputnik Crisis spurred the evolution of satellite television.

The first actual satellite to send a satellite television transmission was Telestar. The first Telestar was a multi-national deal amongst leading countries including Great Britain, France, and the United States. The experiment was conducted back in 1962, when a signal was sent from Europe to North America via satellite. Telestar also relayed telephone calls, facsimile and the first satellite television transmission over the Atlantic ocean.

In 1963, the first geosynchronous communication satellite launched into orbit was Syncom 2. The Geosynchronous orbit is also referred to as (GSO). This term refers to one orbit around the world that follows the exact same path every sidereal day or approximately 23 hours 56 minutes and 4 seconds. Communication satellites were constructed to follow the same position in geocentric gravitational constant. Therefore, allowing an antenna on earth to pick up signal at a fixed position in the geostationary orbit. The United States had its first satellite communication between a U.S. Navy Ship in Nigeria and a Naval Station in New Jersey on July 26th, 1963.

Intelsat 1, nicknamed the "early bird" was the world's first commercial communication satellite. This satellite was launched on April 6th, 1965. The breakthrough helped with the first live television coverage of a spacecraft landing and continuous contact between Europe and North America.

The first satellite launched into commercial distribution in North America was called Anik 1, it was activated in 1972. Satellite Television as we know it today, was born with the launch of the ATS-6. This NASA experiment was for (DBS) or Direct Broadcast Satellite. DBS is the transmission of broadcasts specifically for the home. A broader term used for home and a lower powered satellite is referred to as (DTH) or Direct to Home signals.

Satellite Television transmission starts with the content. The content is uploaded at an uplink facility. The large satellite then transmits information to a specific satellite in the sky based on orbital degrees with the earth. Once, the information is uploaded its retransmitted back down using a parabolic satellite dish antenna. The dish reflects to signal to one focal point that collects the signal and conducts them to a low noise blocker or also known as a ( LNB ). The signal is amplified by the low noise blocker and converted to a frequency range capable of being transmitted over coaxial cable lines you find in most homes today.
