History of DIRECTV

May 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

DIRECTV started back in 1981 when Hughes Electronics and United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB) were awarded frequencies along the 101 degree west location by the FCC. It took Hughes Electronics many years to build and launch the first high-powered satellite capable of handling multiple digital channels. Technology advancements in digital compression made it possible for the multiple digital channels to be stacked onto satellite transponders. The goal was to provide and deliver crystal clear digital channels to the customer's home with a small satellite dish around 18 inches in diameter for the first time in history. The smaller dish would become the predecessor to military technology known as the Global Broadcast System. A Satellite System consist of a satellite dish antenna, satellite set-top box receiver and programming subscription to view the incoming broadcasts. Hughes Electronics made several attempts to launch a joint venture with several cable and media companies but nothing ever materialized. After many failed attempts to raise capital, Hughes launched a separate division in 1990 called DIRECTV. The first satellite was launched with MPEG-2 technology and named DBS 1 or DIRECTV 1. This high-powered geostationary commercial satellite was in a class of its own. DIRECTV secured an agreement with USSB to offer programming service on the first high-powered DBS satellite as a joint venture.

DIRECTV 1 was launched on December 18th, 1993 offering the first high-resolution TV broadcast in the United States and Western Hemispheres. On June 17th 1994, this dream became a reality when DIRECTV opened its programming service to the public. National availability came later that year in October. The programming service was launched alongside USSB which offered premium movies channels and pay per view events. The contract to produce the satellite system was awarded to Thomson Consumer Electronics under the name brand RCA. DIRECTV quickly became the fastest growing television provider offering some of the hottest consumer electronic products through the 1990's. Even with a price point just below $700, the new systems flew off the shelves. The system was basic with only a few channels similar to the cable company and it didn't even include installation. Later on the same year, RCA introduced a more reliable system for under $1000 with a universal remote capable of handling the satellite receiver and television from one remote controller. The newer version was also capable of handling about 150 channels. By 1995, they had already reached one million subscribers.

DIRECTV continued to gain subscribers with the acquisition of PrimeStar, acquiring the service provider for $1.83 billion. Services were later combined and converted to DIRECTV. That same year USSB would be acquired for $1.3 billion. Both acquisitions provided a significant boost in subscriber base and market share by the millions.

Advancements in technology such as the digital video recorder (DVR) helped power the way to 10 million customers by 2001 and 15 million by 2005. In 2007, the company began to power High Definition with MPEG-4 compression. DIRECTV respectively had over 70 national HD channels by the end of 2007. This technology now uses H.264 or MPEG-4 AVC Codec with the protocol named (DVB-S2.) This allows more High Definition content to be sent over the satellite signal than its successor MPEG-2.
