Get to Know Your DISH System

June 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

To understand how the DISH system works consumers should become more familiar with the components. Knowing your satellite system can be very rewarding experience. Let's take a look at the components from the satellite dish outside to the menu on the set-top box.

Satellite Dish

The satellite dish collects the signals transmitted from the satellite. A coaxial cable carries these signals to the receiver, where they are decoded and processed so they can watch satellite television programming.

Receiver

  • Receiver Front Panel

  1. Power Light - This green light on the receiver front panel lights up when the receiver is turned on, and turns off when the receiver is off.
  2. Smart Card Slot - The smart card is inserted in the receiver front panel slot. Depending upon the receiver model, the slot may be covered by a door.
  3. Control Buttons - The receiver front panel buttons allow you to control the receiver.

  • Receiver Back Panel

The back panel of the receiver provides the connectors that you use to wire the receiver to all the other electronic devices that you use. It also provides the receiver power cord, ethernet and telephone jacks. Depending on the wiring setup that you use, you may not use some of these connectors, but they are provided to support any desired setup.

Remote Control

The remote control is a component that sends signals to the satellite receiver. This is the most commonly used device to operate the system. Advanced options may also allow control the TV, BluRay, and other electronic components. Remotes are generally set for infrared (IR) or direct-line-of-sight. Meaning the remote and receiver must see each other to communicate. Alternatively, radio frequency (RF) is a rate of oscillation which corresponds by frequency of radio waves. These waves allow signals to pass without having a clear sight to the receiver.

Main Menu

The main menu is the key to the menu layout. Each option on the menu displays another menu including: program guide, theme categories menu, favorites lists menu, parental and system locks menu.

  • Program Guide

The program guide provides a complete listing of the available channels and programs.

  • Theme Categories

The theme categories menu allows you to choose programs based upon theme of their contents.

Favorites Lists Menu

The favorite's lists menu allows you to create, modify, and activate lists of favorite channels.

  • Parental and System Locks Menu

The parental and system locks menu allows you to set and use security locks.

  • System Setup Menu

The system setup menu provides a number of functions that help you set up and maintain the system.

  • The Browse Banner

You can use the browse banner to change channels or to see what other programs are available without changing the current program. Because the browse banner is transparent, using it will not block out the program you are viewing. If the all channel list is active, the browse banner displays all the channels. If another list is active, the browse banner displays only the channels on that list.

Learning about your satellite system is simple. The most difficult part of learning should be determining which type of system is installed at your home. You should also become more familiar with operating your satellite receiver. This helps prevent user frustration and saves you time plus money.
