DISH or DIRECTV: Similarities and Differences From the Top in the Satellite TV Industry

June 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 334

Satellite TV is a pretty common term for American households these days. If you're interested in satellite TV, you'll need to decide if DISH or DIRECTV is the better choice. Since both companies deliver a similar service, it's important to understand what to consider when making the right decision for your business or household. Every person has a different opinion on how to breakdown each company from price to package but is that really all you need to know! Probably not, here's a quick look that will provide some more insight on each company.

  • DISH Network

In 1980, a C-Band distributor formed a new company under the name EchoStar L.L.C. EchoStar began service operations when the FCC granted space at the 119 orbital slot in 1992. Their first satellite named, "EchoStar I" was launched in 1995. With the success of EchoStar I the company, "DISH Network" was born.

Notables include: acquisition at the 110 orbital which led to a single antenna solution known as the Dish 500, (PVR) personal video recorder now known as the (DVR) digital video recorder, High Definition, a dozen satellites and over 14 million customers. DISH Network would split away from EchoStar in 2008 to focus on its Pay TV service and is speculating the possibility of opening up its own internet service in the near future.

  • DIRECTV

In 1994, a Howard Hughes company named, "DIRECTV" began service as a separate division of Hughes Electronics. This came after attempts to launch services as a joint venture with companies Cablevision, NBC and News Corporation. Prior to launch, DIRECTV teamed up with (USSB) United States Satellite Broadcasting at the 101 orbital position. USSB then delivered premium movie services like HBO and Pay-Per View.

Company notables include the acquisition of USSB, PrimeStar, Partner-ship with TiVo, DIRECTV Everywhere, Whole Home DVR, Most Sports in High Definition and over 19 million customers. Additionally, DIRECTV has exchanged hands with many owners within the likes of Hughes Electronics, General Motors, News Corporation and Liberty Media.

Similarities

  • 100% Digital Quality
  • 99.9% Signal Reliability
  • On-Demand
  • Remote Access
  • Whole Home DVR
  • Satellite Radio
  • Cinema Movies
  • International Programming
  • Various Internet and Package Bundles

Differences

DIRECTV- NFL Sunday Ticket Package, NASCAR Hot Pass, Full Time HD Channels, 1080p Movies, Whole Home Recorder viewing up to 15 rooms with a single High Definition Video Recorder.

DISH - Hopper Whole Home High Definition Video Recorder, Prime Time Anytime, Blockbuster at Home, SIRIUS XM, DISH Online, Live TV - To Go

Both companies are superior in their own nature. DIRECTV aggressively pursues being the leader in Sports while DISH continues to push the best everyday value. Both companies have attractive features so chances are each has something to offer everyone. The same argument can be made for Businesses.
