An Overview Of Satellite Internet Service

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 173

A growing number of households now obtain satellite internet service. Traditionally, such services are provided specifically using low altitude Earth orbit satellites. Geostationary satellites are at times used to offer higher data speed. However, the main drawback of such satellites is the inability of their signals to reach some polar regions of the world.

Such communication never goes without hitches. Signal latency, the delay between seeking data and receiving a response, is one of such hitches. Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light. This is the theoretical maximum speed limit of such signals. Due to the general large distance between the probes and the destination of the signals on the surface of the earth, some finite time elapses before the signal arrives at its destination. Adding the time taken for the signal to travel from the sender to the satellite, to the time taken for the signal to leave the satellite to the recipient, the sum of both times is significant. This is what ultimately leads to signal latency.

Geostationary probes are set up in higher orbits. They are unsuitable for low latency communications. One way of mitigating these high latency effects is by employing low earth orbit probes.

Communication by such means is adversely affected by raindrops and moisture on the atmosphere. The effects of such interference are more severe in the higher frequency bands. Larger dishes can be used to mitigate these effects. Despite the interference due to precipitation, they can still pick up more signals.

A completely clear line of sight between the dish and the probe is required. Vegetation at times blocks the signal path. At lower frequencies that approach the radio frequency, there is better penetration of the signal through obstacles. However, most internet communication occurs at high frequencies and a clear line of sight between the probe and the dish must be achieved.

There is a wide range of internet service customers ranging from individual users at home to large businesses working from large personal computers. Home users typically share bandwidth capacity from a given satellite depending on the amount of bandwidth they have purchased. Each user is given a bandwidth allowance that they cannot exceed.

Home users can access such services using portable modems. Most laptops and personal computers have ethernet and universal serial bus ports that can be used to connect modems. Another alternative way for home users to access these services is by use of satellite phones.

Before any device is used to provide satellite internet access service there are some system hardware and software specifications it should meet. The hardware must at the very least provide interfaces to other networks. The software must have filtering, storing, and displaying capabilities from a remote location.

Over the next few years, satellite internet service will continually bridge the communication gap. It will provide a link between people widely separated by distance. Nevertheless, such access to the internet faces numerous challenges. In the future, problems such as signal latency will be hopefully reduced.
