Mac's Rant - The Phones Have Stopped Ringing

May 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 171

Over the last few months I have had several, sorry many conversations with business people who are concerned about the lack of new customers and orders.

The top three phrases I have heard are

"The phones have stopped ringing and clients just aren't calling me anymore" "I have never had to chase new customers before they just came to me" "I don't know what to do next as my orders have dried up"

It seems to be more common in this current economic climate but it shouldn't be an excuse.

We all have two choices to make if business is not fighting its way to our door. One choice is we do nothing at all and just sit tight and ride through the storm. The other choice is to do something about it and walk towards the sun.I would rather get burnt trying something than die slowly and painfully sitting on my arse.

If nothing is happening and sales aren't coming in like they use to in the good old days do something about it.

Get ready for the world's longest sentence! You can do many things to improve your business, improve your sales skills by reading books about the subject, book on a sales training course, pick the phone up and ring your old customers and ask them is there anything else you could be offering them, go meet people at a networking event, go to a business show and talk to anyone you meet, plan develop and execute a new sales campaign, look at your sales message, do something but don't sit on your arse and tell everyone business is tough.

Business is tough but if we don't do anything it is going to get tougher

If you are one of the people whose phone has stopped ringing you have to do something about it.

In the last few months many of our clients have done something about it. Six months ago one of our clients decided to pick 25 ideal target customers as he had just lost his biggest client with nothing to replace it. That one client was 90% of his business.

He decided to do something about it and put together a targeted sales and marketing campaign with regular and relevant contact. It was difficult however in those six months he has now won eight new corporate clients that will produce regular recurring revenue. It looks likely that two of the new clients will meet and exceed the revenue and profit of his lost customer.

The phones had stopped ringing for him but he decided to do something about it and was rewarded what are you going to do?
