Making Colds Calls to Companies

May 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 196

Cold calling can be nerve racking for many Inventors and they panic or go blank when the other party answers. They forget it is just another person on the other end. Here are some tips that might help you stay focused and calm your nerves. When cold calling keep a legal pad and two pens or pencils beside you. You never know when a pen will run out of ink or a pencil with break.

Prior to the call write down the questions you want to ask, the name of the person or department you are wanting and any other information you are wanting. Also have your 30 second pitch written down, not to read verbatim, but as a guide in case you lose your train of thought. You will find sometimes when making cold calls or regular calls the other person will ask something you were not prepared to answer or had not thought of and that catches you off guard. So that when it is your turn to speak again you are not sure where you left off or did you get all of your questions answered.

It also helps to have the pad so you can write down any questions they ask you and you need to respond to at a later date, via email or on another phone call. Sometimes when you cold call the initial person you ask for or department may switch you over to another department or person.

I have also had the company switch me to another person and found out what they really did was transfer my call to another department of their company that was in another state. I had the address of the company I originally called, but was not aware of this other division and their location. So, when we finished talking he told me to send him some material via snail mail. I asked if the address I had for the company was correct. That was when he told me I was speaking to him from a different location and gave me their address. Otherwise I would have sent it to the address I had for the original location. So, ask and make sure you have the proper info before you get off the phone with them.

The same goes for email. Look at the bottom of the email and see if they have any company information, their phone number, extension or any other information and does it match what you have. If not you may want to question it and verify where you need to send things. I put this info in a database I keep of all my contacts.

Another aspect of cold calling you may not have considered is all the forms of communication that are available. I was calling this company for the first time and the conversation was going well when the person asked " Do you have a Skype account?" Without hesitating I said yes.

A minute later we were talking via Skype. Fortunately I was getting ready to run some errands after the call and was presentable ( as much as I can be LOL ) Think about how many times you have talked on the phone if they had been able to switch right to video what would they see?: )

Here is an experiment I have found interesting. Have a person give you their pitch in person and ask questions about the pitch as they are giving it. Wait 20 minutes and now go into another room and ask them to call your cell phone and give you their pitch and ask questions again and listen to the difference. You will be amazed at the difference and it will help you gain confidence over the phone.

Also, as a general rule when you cold call a company and get their answering machine or voice mail leave a message giving your email address as well as your phone number. Let them decide which works best for them to contact you. Don't leave a message that says " Hi, my name is X call me." Remember it is a cold call. They do not know you. Depending on the message you leave they may decide they don't want to know you.
