How to Cold Call Effectively

January 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 203

Don't knock it if you don't try it just yet. Cold calling can actually be beneficial if done correctly. But you must figure out your niche, services you offer and target the correct businesses to come up with warm leads.

When I first started cold calling to grow my company I was so nervous but just couldn't figure out why. Then one day I realized before I started my business I was cold calling for companies before and was doing pretty well because I strived to be the best and like any employee was looking for a paycheck by the end of the week.

The thing about cold calling is you can be anyone from Jessica to Brittany as long as your confident, don't sound like your reading from a script and as I like to say selling your services with an humph. You can be anyone. Maybe you need to stand, maybe you need to sit, just always make sure you're smiling as it comes through the phone and rubs off on the person on the other end and I'll tell you what if you're happy and confident you're less likely to get hung up on and more likely to get a minute of their time.

Like I said before when I did cold calling for other companies. My goal was to be the best salesman on the floor and I was looking for a decent paycheck and do note this is coming from the most shy person you'll ever meet. But the way I think about it, they can't see me I can't see them so what do I have to loose. So if it makes you feel any better think of it as you're working for another company commission only. You don't want to get let go because you're not doing enough selling, Right? And of course you want to get paid. Well this is your company so it's your business. You need to make money to survive.

Well first we want to start by writing a script. Of course you can have your script purchased but is it really tailored to your audience and what you want to say. Besides that takes the fun out of it and if you're like me I'm always revising everything

When you call you want to greet the person or gatekeeper. If the gatekeeper says her name when answering the phone that gives you better leverage. Act like you know her and the person you're calling act as if they're expecting your call. When that person picks up Greet them, asking how they're doing. (Try to build rapport). Now before you get started ask for a moment of their time. For the business I'm in I always ask what are their biggest challenges and how much time do they spend on administrative tasks. So it depends on what business you're in for your startup question.

Always make sure you listen and typically after each paragraph wait on a response. In the ending make sure to summarize everything that you talked about and no matter the response thank them for their time. If they do want to hear more ask them for their information to forward info about your business to them. Or if possible you can always ask to meet them for a one on one consultation.

Remember when cold calling don't expect businesses to come calling. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Always give a call back. If they're busy or not in the office you still have to call back. Now there's no right way or wrong way to write a script. My thought is to wing it and keep revising it as you go and I'm sure the more you do it you will become such a pro as you would not need a script anymore.
