Is Your Business Garden Sensational?

February 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 145

As the mild winter of 2012 gives way to spring here in Georgia, people sneeze more often and signs of new plant growth and color are beginning to slowly reveal themselves. The changing seasons remind me of the similarities in the cycles of nature and business. What instantly comes to mind for me is, "You will reap what you sow."

In the fall, our entire family spent several days planting hundreds of bulbs. We prepared the soil by tilling, ensured there was proper drainage, and added compost. Next, we made sure every bulb was placed at the right depth, fertilized, and watered in. And then...we waited. Of course, we kept a close eye and had to frequently scare away curious chipmunks and squirrels. But, in the end there was really nothing we could do except be patient.

Finally, after months of hopeful inspection, we noticed sprouts breaking through the ground. One by one, those beautiful, green babies of ours began to defy gravity and reach for the sky. Over a period of a couple weeks, hundreds of sprouts had appeared. And then, the "ultimate miracle" happened. As I drove in the driveway this afternoon, there amongst the loose black soil was our first bloom. Small and fragile, that golden-yellow flower was a sign of success, and a confirmation that if you prepare and sow properly, you will reap the rewards.

I sat staring at the beautiful bloom still in its' infancy, and thought about the people who don't understand the cyclical nature of business. Everyday I work with business owners who are not experiencing an acceptable level of success. In most cases, I believe it's simply because they don't understand their specific business cycle. Some of them sow seeds, but then give up before their crops have a chance to bloom. Others expect a crop, without ever committing to the full and proper planting process. I constantly think to myself, "if only they understood the process."

To have a Sensational Business Garden, you must apply the five P's. Always plan, prepare, plant, protect and be patient. Sure, things can go wrong with certain crops during various cycles and seasons, and that's why the secret is to continuously sow seeds! Do this year-round, and you will surely become a sensational business gardener, able to reap a bountiful harvest any time of the year. I hope that both of your thumbs are green when it comes to your real garden and your business garden.
