Medieval Charm in Croatia - A Yacht Charter Holiday in Biograd

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 191

Biograd seems to have been predestined to become a famous sailing destination because its name translates to "White City by the Sea". It's much more than just a typical coastal town of the Croatia shores bordering the Adriatic. Sure, it does have that medieval charm that can be found along these shores, but it's elevated to such a degree that at some point in time, it was actually good enough to become the capital city of Croatia.

The geography of the city is spread across a small peninsula that overlooks two smaller islands, the Planac and the Sveta Katarina islands. Some of the old charm of Croatian kings still lives to this day and that's why it's such a popular sailing holidays spot.

As a testament to the town's long history, one of the main tourist attractions in Biograd is the St. John's basilica which was built in the 11th century and was made doubly famous by its survival of the town's sacking by the Venetians.

For those yacht charter groups that would like to learn more about Biograd's tumultuous history, the local history museum stands on the waterfront, ready to give a enlightening lesson. Those with a passion for sailing holidays will be doubly rewarded since here they're also going to find some ancient boats on display. Somewhere else in Biograd, you'll be able to visit the "tropicarium" which has a lot of exotic fish and reptile species.

Outside of town a curious skipper will find one of the most beautiful natural regions Croatia has to offer, the Kornati archipelago with the Krka National Park for which you can book a boat trip with one of the local companies that have bases on the local waterfront. It's a must do while in Biograd.

And since you're already on the waterfront, it's time to grab a bite to eat, as this is one of the best places for eating out in the city. The recipes the local restaurants serve are simple yet delicious, true to the Dalmatian cuisine, although you'll find that many venues also serve intricate recipes from international menus in an effort to attract fancier customers.

After the sun sets, you'll have to direct your steps to the town's promenade which is the main gathering point for all fun-seekers. This is where all the after-dark magic happens, with all the bars and clubs opening their doors to the party crowds. The offer is pretty varied here and you're bound to find something to your liking, from the quiet, intimate bars where you can have a quiet drink with someone special, to the loud clubs that play modern music. And for those that don't like returning home until after the sun has risen, there's the added bonus of no curfew, like there is in many medieval cities in Croatia.

The local marinas play a significant role in the yacht charter business. They organize large and well-known regattas throughout the year, contributing to the propagation of this branch of the yachting industry, as well as provide a service to the local tourism. Among the events being organized by the local yacht clubs, the most important is the Biograd regatta going on in October.
