Learn to Sail for Newbies - Five Low Cost Ways to Go Sailing!

January 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

Do you want to learn to sail, without the high price of sailing schools? In these tough times, we all are looking for free or almost free. And you can sail for free or almost free with five simple sailing tips you can put into play today!

1. Find Your Local Marina Bulletin Board

Go down to the nearest marina and walk into the main office, club house, or laundry room. These are typical places you'll find a bulletin board. Look over the board and see if anyone needs crew to help sail their boat from point A to point B. Write down the info and call them today! Crew positions fill up fast. This might be the opportunity of a lifetime.

2. Post a Bright Yellow Index Card

Buy yellow index cards. Everyone uses white; you want yours to stand out. Advertise that you want to learn to sail, or that you are available to crew on any boat. Write your first name and phone number in clear, block letters. Add a photo to make your card unique and increase your chances of a response.

3. Contact the Sailing Yacht Club

Get in touch with the local yacht club to ask them what nights they have races. Many clubs race in the middle of the week. Ask how you can go online and put your name on the "crew available" list. If you get picked up as racing crew, you will learn to sail faster than just about any other method.

4. Trade Marina Work for Sailing Fun!

Ask the dock-master (supervisor) if you can help tie up or move boats, clean up around the yard, or help with boat or engine repairs for free. In exchange, you would like to be able to take out one of their rental sailboats on an hour-for-hour exchange. When you consider rental sailboats can run $150 and up for half a day rental, this could be a great deal for you.

5. Walk the Docks and Talk Around

What's the most common way that world traveling sailors get positions? They walk the piers and talk to whoever they see to find out who's looking for crew. You can do this too. No need to be shy. Most sailing folks are super friendly and helpful. And they know each other too. They are your #1 source for the best sailing opportunities available.

Learn to sail for next to no cost with these five sailing tips. You will save lots of money and fulfill your dream faster to get you into the fantastic and rewarding sport of sailing.
