Frugal Living Aboard a Sailboat

May 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 229

If you enjoy, or think you would enjoy, the freedom that living aboard a sailboat will give you... You will be pleased when you discover that living aboard a sailboat does not require a lot of money.

We lived on a sailboat in the Caribbean for eight wonderful years and we know how little it costs.

Let's compare what you would spend living in a house versus living in a sailboat.

Instead of a mortgage payment or rent... Assuming your boat is paid for... You have eliminated these expenses... Anchoring is free remember.

Let's look at commuting costs... Your car requires fuel, maintenance and the cost to insure it. The stress of driving in traffic... Well you can put a cost on that if you like.

If you live on a boat your "commute", is replaced by what it costs you to operate your dinghy... If you row your dinghy your cost of commuting or zero, plus you get the exercise.

If you have an outboard motor on your dinghy, your cost for gasoline are minimal when compared to a gas hungry car getting you to and from work. No tollbooths on the water.

How about clothing costs? Suits, dress shirts, ties, belts,, dresses, blouses, leather shoes are replaced by an occasional new T-shirt swim trunks or straw beach hat. Waterproof sandals for your footwear do not require shining.

Healthcare costs, at least in our experience in the Caribbean, are vastly cheaper than the cost of healthcare in the US. Most live aboard cruisers are self-insured and pay for a doctor visit or dentist visit as needed.

For instance, teeth cleaning is performed in foreign countries by the dentist himself or herself...the cost? no more than $30.

When you combine the fact that you are breathing fresh air when living on a boat 24 hours a day seven days a gain all the benefits of outdoor living.

Modern sailboats use 12 V electricity to run the refrigerator, lighting and other functions that would call for expensive utilities when living in a house...on a sailboat you are living off the grid, your power supplied by solar panels and/or a wind generator... Not only is making your own power cheap, the sun the wind are free, it is a very green way of living as well.

Land transportation costs... Instead of automobiles with their inherent cost listed above... You use public transportation, buses and taxis... In the Caribbean the cost for public transportation ranges from seven cents in Venezuela to one dollar in the United States Virgin Islands.

Entertainment and dining expenses...there are not a lot of five-star dining establishments in the Caribbean... You replace elegant dining with a dish of fresh fish and vegetables served in a beach restaurant with sand floors.

Frugal living on a sailboat is a bonus... The real plus of moving from a home to a sailboat is the stress-free lifestyle and freedom that a live aboard cruiser enjoys.

If we can do it with no prior boating experience you can too.

Live the Dream..

Get your copy of Live the on a sailboat in the Caribbean... It will show you step-by-step, how two non-sailor's, enjoyed life for eight wonderful fun and safe years living on their own boat in the Caribbean... If we can do it you can do it.
