A Yacht Charter Holiday in Split

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

This is another town of the list of Croatian towns that has evolved from an old Roman town to a great yacht charter sailing destination. The main reasons for that is the fact that many sailing veterans consider this place as the best starting location to explore the Dalmatian coastline.

But Split is not just one fabulous summertime resort with great sailing potential, it's also one of the most famous, biggest, oldest and most prestigious cities on this side of the Adriatic, which gives it a lot of pedigree and affords it a certain charm which you won't be able to find anywhere else.

Its long and tumultuous history begins with the founding by famous Roman emperor Diocletian who fell in love with the beauty of the local weather and nature and decided to make this place his retirement home once he left Rome. He built a beautiful palace that can still be seen today and remains one of the best preserved Roman palaces in the world.

If this already made you curious about the wonderful town of Split, then you should know that the easiest way of arriving here is by airplane, since the Split Airport is the second largest in the country after the one in the capital city of Zagreb. It's located 25km from the city, and 3km from another yacht charter hot spot, Trogir, also popular with sailors.

Once here, you can immediately embark on a tour of the city, which should obviously start with the aforementioned Diocletian's Palace which actually represents the town's center. Enter through any of its 4 monumental gates and then take your time in admiring the intricate details and its exquisite architecture which has since served as a model for many famous architects. Continue your tour of Split with the St. Duje's Cathedral, the Peristil Square, Jupiter's Temple, the two Egyptian Sphinxes, the promenade known to locals as Riva and the Archaeological Museum.

After you get a feel of the local charm, it's maybe time to bring some of that Split sailing holiday charm back with you home. For that, you'll need at least one souvenir purchased locally. The best place to do that is the Podrum underground shopping center that sells mainly arts and crafts or the Enoteka Terra from where you can purchase wine and spirits. For a more fashionable choice, head on down to the streets of Marmontova, where you can do some shopping at high fashion boutiques.

Due to the proximity of the clear waters of the Mediterranean, a large part of the Split cuisine relies on fresh fish and seafood which is not only very delicious but also very healthy. Among the local delicacies you can try something like salted anchovies in olive oil, roasted lamb baked under an open fire on a baker's lid and the famous Primosten wines to wash it all down with.

The real party in Split begins after sunset. At that time the normally crowded promenade turns into a loud gathering of people who all mingle in search of entertainment. For that reason, the municipality has set up most of the events like concerts, exhibitions, dance events, street theater and other public displays to coincide with the tourist season in the summer time. The largest such event is the Split Summer Festival which was inaugurated back in 1854 and has been going on ever since.
