A Historical Yacht Charter Holiday in Corfu

June 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 191

Corfu is one of those summer destinations that have a certain flavor that increases their appeal. It's been described as a good place for art lovers thanks to all the architecture and the monuments available to the public, offering a glimpse into the tumultuous past of this island.

Corfu is known affectionately as "Kekyra" which is what the locals call it. It's located in the northern part of the Ionian Archipelago, actually being the northernmost island in the group, and it shares its name with the main city on the island, which is Corfu Town. Due to its large size and importance it's also the home of the main international airport of the region and the main harbor where all the large cruise ships and ferries will dock. Corfu Town is the beating heart of the island, not to mention the biggest tourist attraction.

Considered a strategic point ever since ancient Greek times, the town of Corfu is a sought after yacht charter destination. That is why during its long history it changed hands multiple times, from the Greeks to the Romans and later the Venetians, then the French through Napoleon Bonaparte, then the Russians and even the Turks.

By the time the Second World War had passed, the island was returned to Greek control and it was then that Corfu began a period of development, economical, cultural and social. Today, the strong cultural scene is aided by the university, the museums, the libraries, not to mention by the numerous festivals.

One of the most favored activities in the summer time by the people who choose a Corfu boat rental holiday is sunbathing and the island has a couple of splendid beaches to provide with their much-needed rays. The only thing to remember is that the beaches on the west side of the island are sandier while on the east side the waters are calmer.

For all you skippers out there, there's no denying that Corfu is a great place for a sailing holiday, since it has great weather conditions: waters are generally calm, the winds are fair for almost the entire year and there is the added bonus of a strong sailing infrastructure on the island that affords an abundance of mooring places. One of the more popular trips for those who come here is the round-the-island trip which you have to try at least once when coming here.

Even if the local cuisine and the restaurants that serve are great in Corfu, you'll notice that the prices here are a bit steep, more than in other places in Greece. Some of the best and idyllic restaurants are the ones along the coast and the ones near the old part of town. Among the local delicacies, you'll simply have to try the ginger beer, an oddity in Greece that was introduced by the British during their protectorate of the island. The locals are today producing their own version which is called "Tsitsibeera".

Among the things that you can find in Corfu for decent prices are quintessentially Greek products such as olive oil, ceramics and leather goods. For those that venture further into the countryside towards the inside of the island, you might find locally-produced wine, honey and olive oil, purchased directly from the farmers. This would make a great addition to your kitchen at home since they are natural as well as being made after old recipes that have endured.
