Things To Know When Renting A RV In New Zealand

March 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 107

Renting a vehicle in a new country that you are unfamiliar with requires you to be aware of the differences between what you are used to and the driving regulations, laws, and local knowledge of your destination country. If you are planning on renting a RV in New Zealand there are several things you need to know.

Driving on the left hand side of the road in a left hand drive vehicle is probably the biggest difference to those visitors who are used to right hand drive vehicles. This is something that may feel very strange for the first few days and always driving cautiously will make the transition smooth.

If you new to driving a RV rental the next difference you will notice compared to driving your usual car is the size. Whilst manoeuvring through traffic will mostly remain the same, finding a car parking space you feel you can safely enter and exit may take a little more time as will using your mirrors to ensure you have enough space. Just like the left hand side driving, you'll soon become accustom to the size.

For anyone who is new to driving in New Zealand whether it be in their RV rental or another vehicle a key thing to remember whilst planning your journey is that many of the roads in New Zealand are narrower and windier than in many countries and you will need to ensure you allow adequate time for your journey between destinations, particularly in winter where the weather may add additional time due to the conditions.

New Zealand has a small population, just 4.4 million, and because of this there are some minor roads that are unsealed, these roads will require particular caution when driving, however all of the state highways and main roads are well maintained and you will have no problems with them. New Zealand is a very popular location for RV rentals and there are many camping grounds and holiday parks with facilities designed for RV's including 'dump stations' where you will dispose of your waste water.

If you RV rental has 'self-containment' this will provide you will approximately three days worth of waste water storage meaning you won't need to dispose of your waste water everyday which will be handy if you choose to 'free camp' during your vacation. It is however illegal to dispose of your waste outside of a dump station so you will need to take this into account during your vacation.
