The Benefits of Renting an RV

May 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 187

The recreational vehicle (RV), motor home, coach or whatever else you may call it, is actually a luxury "toy." It is another way to show off for friends and associates, a way to entertain while traveling in style. But, should you rush out to buy one because you can? Let us consider a few reasons why you may want to think twice before buying, and consider renting instead.

First of all, they can be reasonably expensive. Anything new can cost you well above $100k. While that is less than the average house on the market, there are other costs involved. Fuel to get around and power the RV, maintenance cost and engine repairs, and the hassle of finding a parking spot when you are not driving, are all things that will affect your budget. If your budget is as important to you as it is to me, than it is always a good practice to evaluate your options.

  • Fuel or Propane. Of course, if you rent an RV, you still have to cover the cost of fuel, but many RV rental lots will include a certain number of "free miles" and "generator hours" with your trip. This is great for weekend outings or 1 to 2 week vacations. Unless you plan to live in your RV year round, there is no use in keeping all the appliances running. Things like your refrigerator and air conditioning units will keep running your propane levels down, and if you are plugged up, the cost of electricity used must be calculated.
  • Repairs and Maintenance. Any RV owner will tell you that repairing something as intricate as a motor home is no inexpensive task. Taking chances making repairs yourself might even cost you more. If you rarely use your RV, the cost of maintenance should be significantly low, but then again, if you rarely use your RV, that is another reason you should be renting.
  • RV Parking. With the laws changing almost every year regarding RV Parks, legal RV parking spaces, and other statutes, it has become almost impossible to own anything longer than 20 feet. Neighbors complain because your Class C Motor Home "almost" reaches the side walk and they can't see down the block. City commissioners are voting on whether or not it is legal to "live" in an RV not parked in an RV park. If you do find a park or storage lot, it will probably cost you more than storing a TV and some old furniture. Finding a location when not in use is yet another reason to rent your mobile home and give it back when you are done.

I could probably take a survey of RV owners and find out more reasons why it would be preferable to rent an RV, but these reasons above are probably the strongest. One last reason is that the responsibility of keeping it clean is only yours while you use it. Some RV sales lots which also have units available to rent, make sure the carpets are shampoo'd, the plumbing is flawless, and your experience can be focused on enjoying yourself. But, if you'd like more reason to consider before making a decision, or you still are interested in purchasing, contact your local RV dealer.

I have had the experience of working with Broward RV and learning a great deal more than I ever knew about Motor Homes. For information about renting, buying, or service for your RV, please contact Broward RV:
