Simple Tips for Finding How Many Solar Panels Your RV Needs

May 02, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 147

Once the decision is made to use solar power for your RV the next questions is, "How many panels do I need," or, "What wattage do I get?"

A general rule of thumb is that a 125 watt panel will keep you going for a weekend or by adding another 125 watt panel for a total of 250 watts, you should be able to dry camp for about a week.

If you want to be more precise than that you can check what wattage is needed for the appliances that will be drawing on your batteries and estimating how many hours (or portions of hours) the appliance will be running per day. Usually the wattage amount can be found on the appliance or in the owner's manual. You will probably need to estimate on some of your appliances such as your refrigerator which does not run continuously but switches off and on as energy is required. You can use your calculations to determine what size of panel(s) you need.

Another way to get an idea of how much energy you use, the next time you go camping do strictly dry camping, do not use hookups even if they are available. You should be able to determine how much energy you are using by keeping track of the draw on your batteries and the level of charge you have after one day. This will give you an estimate on what you will need as far as wattage when considering which RV solar panel(s) to purchase. And remember it is very easy to add panel(s) if you underestimate your energy needs. With the plug and play modules, it is a simple process to expand your solar array.

There have been instances where one 125 watt panel kept a couple going for 3 days even while running their furnace during the night, however we don't know if they were using their TVs, DVDs, Computers, etc. By using either example above you should get a fairly accurate idea of how much power your family will need each day. And remember, as soon as the sun comes out your panels are harvesting that energy and replenishing your batteries to keep you up and running.

Considering the price of gas and the noise and clatter of a generator, it makes sense that many people are deciding solar is the way to go for dependable, quiet and free energy while enjoying the sights and sounds that nature provides in your solar RV.
