Buying a Caravan - Top Tips to Buying a Static Caravan

May 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

If you are thinking about buying a used or new static caravan, to provide you and your family with a future holiday home, I have just gone through the whole process, and this article is aimed at providing you with some top tips to help you through the whole purchasing process.

So, here are my top 10 tips:

1. Before even trying to find the van of your dreams, I would strongly advise you to make direct telephone contact, or even better still, arrange an on-site meeting with the management team. The reason for this is that such first impressions will give you a real indication of what to expect if you want to proceed further. I did this to check out my three short-listed holiday parks, and it helped me choose the right location for my family's needs.

2. I would recommend that you decide what distance from home will be comfortable and most practical, to suit your family circumstances.

3. Be very careful, if you are thinking of buying a static caravan through a private seller, as we found out that each holiday park has their own rules and regulations in this regard. We nearly paid the price of making a big mistake when we were ready to buy privately, only to learn that we could face the real possibility of having to find somewhere else to move and site it, if the park decided that its age and condition was not to their satisfaction. So, be sure to check this aspect before committing yourself to any binding purchase agreement.

4. With so many types and designs for you to choose from, you should take every opportunity to physically view and walk around as many variants as you possibly can. Make sure that the accommodation, facilities and layout all meet with your every family requirement.

5. Decide early on if you want your static caravan to have double glazing and/or central heating. We decided to go for double glazing and not central heating in ours, but I would say that we do have the gas fire and some electric background heating on, during cold spells (which are fairly frequent in the UK at the moment).

6. Once you have fully considered and completed your initial research, and you feel ready and want to buy, I cannot stress highly enough the importance of agreeing where your caravan will be located on the park of your final choice. We were persistent with our salesman, turning down a number of available sites, before finding the right one for us, which has a beautiful setting overlooking the sea and close to easy access to the beach.

7. Next, you have to decide if you want to buy new or second hand, and know how you are going to finance your new asset.

8. Walk around the whole holiday park, both inside and outside, checking out the facilities as you go. You'll want to find out if there is an indoor swimming pool, or owners' leisure complex. Ask if the holiday park provides a fun and entertainment programme for your children. Visit the surrounding countryside to see if it is an area you will be happy to spend time in and enjoy.

9. Book a static caravan holiday to make sure that the whole family is going to enjoy this new lifestyle.

10. Finally, you must know what your annual site fees and running costs are going to be. Be sure to scrutinise all the small print before committing to any investment.
