How To Choose The Right Motorcycle Breakdown Cover For You

February 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 160

Any biker that has suffered a breakdown can tell you that being stuck at the side of a road, miles from your destination and without any means of fixing your bike is not fun. Even attempting to fix a problem at the side of the road without the right equipment can potentially be dangerous, as with the number of vehicles on Britain's road constantly increasing, so does the risk of serious injury. With this in mind, it is important to consider taking out some form of motorcycle cover that will entitle you to roadside assistance in the event of a mechanical problem. A motorcycle breakdown package can provide peace of mind, as those with valid policies know that if your bike should fail in any way, help is only a phone call away.

The first thing to consider is whether you would be better off getting a personal policy or one that covers a vehicle. Vehicle cover is one of the cheaper forms of breakdown policy on the market, providing cover in the event of a breakdown regardless of who is riding it (provided they have a full license, of course). Personal cover costs more but entitles you to roadside assistance and recovery if you are the rider or pillion passenger on any bike. Some breakdown coverage providers are even offering packages that allow more than one individual to be named on a single policy.

The extra cost of a personal policy reflects the level of service that type of cover provides, but it does not necessarily offer the best value for money. If you ride a multitude of different motorcycles each week then a personal policy may be right for you. If you only ever ride one motorbike, then taking out a policy that covers the vehicle may suit your needs and pocket more. Which policy to get is really dependent on your budget and the amount of use your bike gets.

It is also worth looking at what 'level' of cover you can afford. The most basic 'level' of breakdown cover is roadside, where a technician will try to get your bike going at the roadside or tow it to a local garage if it cannot be fixed there and then. Paying for any labour at the garage is down to you. National cover entitles you to roadside assistance and transportation to a destination of your choice. Home start cover allows you to call out a technician if you cannot get your bike started in the morning as well as the perks of a national cover policy.

Other than policies that cover riders in Europe, the highest level of cover in the UK is an 'onward travel' policy. With this cover, your breakdown insurance provider will pay for any further travel by train or taxi and any accommodation that is required as a result of a breakdown. Most providers cap the amount to prevent abuse.

Now you know what breakdown policies are available, making an informed decision should be easy. Good luck!
