What's The Best Way To Improve Your Running?

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 144

Trying to improve your running and train for longer distances like the marathon is a major undertaking that requires time, motivation and a good level of fitness. Many people do see an initial increase in their performance level, but then seem to reach a plateau quite quickly and have difficulty improving from there.

There are several training methods you can follow to be able to run faster and/or longer. But what is the single most important training strategy that will help you to run better? Here are a few of the main techniques that you can try if you want to run a faster race next time out.

1. Increase Your Training Mileage

Many people believe that increasing their training mileage will improve their performance. Elite athletes often run over 100 miles per week. This is a much more mileage than most of us would attempt, but increasing your running distances can put a lot of strain on your body.

2. Increase Your Running Intensity

Another popular way is to simply train harder, usually by running at a faster speed and also including hills during your runs. This will make you stronger, but your risk of injury is also greater. The best way is to mix the harder runs in w easy ones, although many runners tend to over-train.

3. Mix in other sports

A good way to build overall strength is to do alternate forms of exercise. For a runner this includes things like swimming, which is a good all-round body builder. Another complementary activity is cycling, which is great for strengthening the quadriceps muscles, which often get overlooked in regular running.

4. Modify Your Diet

Eating lots of carbohydrates is a requirement for endurance sports like the marathon. It's also necessary to ensure you are getting enough protein as well. So eating a proper diet can definitively help to improve your running performance.

5. Take Energy Drinks

Lots of runners rely on drinks like energy gels or Gatorade to help provide the energy they need. These will help because at some point your body is going to run out of available energy from stored carbohydrate sources. The best way to see if the energy supplements do help you is to try them out on your longer training runs.

All of these training techniques will help to improve your running performance, but which one stands out from the rest?
