Solving Problems in the Future Is a Great Idea But Don't Expect to Get Credit for It

July 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 238

Some say it takes brilliance to solve problems, and that may be so. The same folks will tell us that it takes a genius to not have the problem in the first place. Nevertheless, generally speaking those geniuses which solve problems in advance, therefore the problems never occur, also never seem to get much credit for it. However, if there is a catastrophe, it is interesting that we usually hire the people that got us into the problem to solve it again, and generally they create more unintended consequences. Perhaps at some point we should ask why we are doing, one reason is because they are closest to the problem during the crisis, but that's not the only reason.

Okay so, this somewhat gets into the theory behind the definition of insanity doesn't? That is to say, hiring the people that caused the problem to fix it and create more is definitely the wrong way to play it.

Often people are tasked with solving problems in the future, problems that don't yet exist, but may at some point. Sometimes they solve a problem which doesn't exist, or may never exist, but we don't know that, they won't get credit either way. More often than not, we ask ourselves "what if" and then as if we expect it to happen, we figure out a way to prevent it from happening in advance. Of course, we can't know for sure if that will happen, and we risk stifling the project, adding more criteria, or eliminating its potential future success through excessive bureaucracy.

If we make a wrong decision, we know who to blame, but they can always say they had no way of knowing. Whereas, that may be true because no one can know all the future variables, there may be a genius out there somewhere with a better solution at the time who could've prevented it. He may be able to stand up and say; "I told you so," however, if his method was chosen, and no problem ever occurred, we would never know his name. We only know someone's name when something goes wrong and we look back to find out who to make a scapegoat.

Perhaps this is why as I sit in our think tank and discuss problem-solving with others, I always realize how fickle the society can be, and how easy it is to allow someone to trample your ideas, or brush away your critique. It's important that we listen to the geniuses more than those who are merely brilliant. You see, one in 10,000 people is probably brilliant, but only one in 1 million is a genius. Indeed, I ask that you please consider all this and think on it, and nothing more. That'll be enough for now.
