Retired Roommates Save

April 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Retirement Roommates, for the last 18 years I have wondered why more retired people have not considered taking a retired roommate or any person that is interested in saving money by living together. In a retirement community there great savings with this type of arrangement. Here are some of the aspects that most overlook by thinking it would be impossible to live with another person. If you can get over the paradigm that makes us feel that we must live alone or with a wife you will be able to see how it is a very rewarding arrangement. Now for what this arrangement has to offer.

  • Economical
  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Physical
  • Emergencies
  • Safety

1. Economics are part of what we learned in the past few years. Here is something else to look at today.

  • In a shared retirement apartment we can expect to share rent cost, which can be mostly inclusive with food, utilities, transportation, and entertainment. This can be a very good value with all things included.

2. Social Life is better when enjoying it with someone close to you. Living in a retirement apartment with another person is great. When finding the right person to share life with, make decisions that will make you happy.

  • We share the work load in apartment care
  • We share problems with one another
  • We share activities and this includes mealtimes which are included in the rent cost.
  • Social hour happens weekly along with events planned by directors.

3. Emotional Experiences are when another person can help lighten the load. We sometimes have events in our lives that another person's ear seems to make you feel a little better. Here are some of those times

  • When you lose a member of your family
  • When you are going through a medical problem
  • When you are feeling lonely
  • When it takes two to play a game

4. Physically we are all different and each of us have the ability to do certain physical motion. Some of us can raise or limbs easily, some speak with ease, some of us eat better than others. Living with another person hasseveral unique aspects.

  • When you can't do something and another person can do it easily
  • Driving at times has physical or mental drawbacks for one person
  • Medical limitation has been an issue of need to live with another person
  • Two can live cheaper than one

5. Emergencies can hit at any time and there are two people to deal with a problem when there are two people living in the same apartment. As they say "Tow heads are better than one" also the community has emergency call systems and others are alerted to the problem. The managers of these communities are trained to handle such emergencies and to get the help needed very quickly. You can make a decision to push the emergency button or not.

  • Your roommate would be the first person to know there is a problem and that allows you the option of calling the experts or dealing with the problem on your own.
  • Your family is comfortable if you have someone near you to help make things more comfortable.
  • in emergencies you feel safer with another person close by to make sure you have the help needed
  • Other emergencies don't have to be medical, sometimes we just need something from the store

6. Safety one of the most important parts of someone being there when something happens. Falls can happen, stroke, heart attack, diabetic comma, seizure, or a number of things as we age are out there. We never know when or how we are going to react to some of our medical problems. We could have an intruder when this happens it could save your life if the intruder has bad intentions. We could choke or cut our self and the list goes on and on.

How have we made it through life for so long with out someone else in our lives? The reason is that most of us have had others in our lives for a long period of time. I am in my mid 60's and as I get older I see the need is great for someone in my life from this point on. I have had a roommate for the past 40 years and I met her from a friend of mine. The point is that we never knew each other before we met. None of know each other but there are ways of meeting people without safety issues or at least minimized safety issues.

Look at all the ads out there that are for dating sites. They all ask questions about what you like. Questions like are you a smoker or drinker? Are you concerned about appearance, personal or home? Are you lonely? Are you afraid of meeting someone who will not interest you?

Most of the questions are answered before you would ever consider living with another person. I have had sisters who this works well for but there are others that have found success in sharing life with another person. We see proof of this every day when someone sells home and moves in with another person. At the age of 60 we have become more tolerable than when we were 21. Life has a way of calming us down and making us understand the problems of others easier. Another way of calming us down is when we have a medical emergency. This seems to be a determining factor of our tolerance for other people.

Since 2008 there has been more in the news about this than ever before. Here is a small clip out of a New York news paper I noticed today. "Senior roommates share bills, lives" this article was from 2008 and now I see these types of articles showing up all over the country. You are not going to be the only one to discover that life with another person can be rewarding.

Retired people can look at sharing an apartment to conserve the money it will take to stayed retired through their coming years. Never think you have it made, it will prove you wrong a number of times. Retired roommates can live together for nearly half the cost of one person paying for an apartment by themselves. Retirement can have its hassles when you add the cost of medical, food, entertainment and maintenance to the equation. Senior roommates have the option to help one another with odds and ends of living in the same apartment. Sharing seems the best way for seniors to deal with retirement.
