Best Cities for Retirees

March 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

When the time comes to retire, you have a decision to make. Do you want to continue living in your current city, or do you want to retire in a beautiful, active place that is great for retirees? Who knows, maybe you already live in a city that has a great life for active adults, and may not know it. See if your city is on the list.

Huntsville, Alabama

First on the list is the city of Huntsville, Alabama, with a population of approximately 180,000 people. Huntsville's claim to retirement fame is their gorgeous acres of parks, which include several public golf courses and recreation centers as well as over 170 miles of biking paths. Retirees can also enjoy fishing and hiking in nearby nature preserves.

Tucson, Arizona

The Beatles sang about the exciting city of Tucson, Arizona, and retiring there may sound like a great idea to you. There are many historic places to visit in Tucson, including archaeological sites and old mining towns right outside of the city, as well as the St. Augustine Cathedral from the 19th century within the city. There are also some incredible petroglyphs at Signal Hill nearby. If you get an itch to ski, you can go hit the slopes at Mount Lemmon.

Austin, Texas

They have a saying in Austin, Texas: "Keep Austin Weird!" If you enjoy the weirdness of a place with a slogan like that, you have come to the right place. But even if you do not, there are many places within and near the Austin area that are not as "weird." The capital of Texas is relatively affordable with a median home price of $124,000, and although you might suffer through some harsh summers, the weather throughout the year tends to be beautiful. If you enjoy the performing arts, look no further than the symphonies at Long Center for the Performing Arts. If you do happen to enjoy the weirdness, there are always great eclectic shows to attend in downtown Austin.

Iowa City, Iowa

Living in Iowa City, Iowa may spark an interest in seniors who are avid literary fans. Aspiring writers have traveled to Iowa City for the University of Iowa's famous writing workshops, but you do not have to be a bookworm to enjoy this city. There are jazz festivals, movie nights outdoors, and many other enjoyable activities for people of all ages. Try your hand - or feet - at salsa dancing by taking a class at the university.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

More commonly known as one of the country's most livable cities, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania boasts a low cost of living as well as an excellent arts scene. If you are in need of health care, look no further than Pittsburgh, for they have great health care options. Seniors who are avid football fans will enjoy watching the Pittsburgh Steelers play, and artsy retirees will enjoy the art museums.

Retirees have several places to choose from for retirement. These are just a few of the many cities that have wonderful senior living amenities. Do your research and find out which city is right for your retirement needs.
