The Ideal Clothes Rail

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 258

The right shop fittings can make a huge difference to the way a retail space looks and feels, but in order to keep that first-day crispness, shop floor managers and staff have to make sure that every detail stays perfect. That means keeping the space clean and tidy, and also making sure that each fitting and display is used as effectively as possible at all times.

Unfortunately, few retailers have as much space as they would like. Sometimes it can be very tempting to overcrowd the display areas with too many goods, but this can be a serious mistake. If a clothes rail is overstuffed with too many garments it can look scrappy and unprofessional. This warning is particularly important for formal wear retailers, where every item on display must be treated with respect if it is to fetch the right price. Casual wear retailers can afford to be a little more relaxed in their approach but it is still important to make sure that no rail is too full.

If there are too many garments on a single rail none of them will look as good as they might, and it will also be much harder for customers to browse through and find the size and colour they want. Getting people to browse and then try on a garment goes a long way towards generating a sale so it's impossible to attach too much importance to the ways in which retailers can encourage their customers to interact with the wares, examine them closely, and even handle them.

Where possible, only one style should be kept on a single clothes rail. If there is enough space it's best to keep a whole rail for each size and colour combination, but of course, this isn't always practical when space is limited. The garments should be neatly hung on good quality hangers- nothing brings down the perceived value of a garment faster than messy hanging or a worn, cheap, or broken hanger- and arranged in size order. That way it's very easy for customers to find their size. If items are kept in order it's also easier for shop floor staff to see if a size is not represented on the rails. They can then restock as necessary.

Some customers will ask if they don't find their size but others won't and sales can be lost this way just as easily as they can be lost through poor hanging or overcrowded shop fittings. Continual restocking is crucial and but it's still far better to have staff keep a lookout for size gaps than it is to put all stock out on the shelves as soon as it arrives.

Last but not least, the rails should be carefully arranged. Clear lines of sight should be maintained, allowing staff to effectively monitor the shop floor easily. A well thought-through configuration of clothing rails will also make the space seem more open and inviting to passing customers. They shouldn't force customers to edge past one another or into dead-end corridors.
