Smart Phones Versus Kiosks Considered

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

Electronic kiosks and self-serve retail apparatuses have been all the rage for the last five years. The industry has grown by leaps and bounds, even faster than the GDP of China, or the increase in costs of US healthcare or college tuition. That as you know is an incredible growth rate indeed. Now then, I would like to talk to you about the future of kiosks, and have you realize that there is still quite a bit of growth potential in the future.

The reason I make this statement, is there are some who are now claiming that the industry cannot sustain the current level of growth, in part because consumers don't not need to go to kiosks, with all their smart phone apps, they have it right in the palm of their hand. Whereas, some of that might be true, I think it underestimates the reality that mobile personal tech devices have allowed people to un-tether and go out into the real world to do more.

As they do more, they will need more. And just because people can go online and order just about anything to have it delivered, there is still a lot more to this story. The other day I read an interesting article titled "Are kiosks still relevant in a mobile world?" posted on February 20, 2012 by Michael Ionescu which appeared in the Self Service World trade journal. The article stated:

"Many ask how kiosk companies are still viable with the rapid growth of smart phones. Because a smartphone can do many things a kiosk can but doubles as one's own personal device, the basic assumption is that a smartphone would make kiosks obsolete - but then why is the kiosk industry growing and still thriving today? The answer is that while mobile phones have the capability to mimic the functionality of kiosks, consumers just don't use smartphones in that way."

Indeed, interesting point, and yet, I have another point as this future unfolds, one not a lot of people are even addressing; the merging of these technologies for instance. Consider if you will that when someone's personal tech device runs out of electricity or juice, they need to recharge the battery. Therefore they have to go to some place to plug in, and that place could very well be a kiosk. Further, people with mobile technology can now interface with the kiosks, and make self purchasing a snap because of this device they are holding in their hand.

Therefore, maybe we should talk about the merging of these two technologies, and how they will work together in the future to solve all the challenges that the modern retailer faces in electronic age. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on.
