How to Make a Resume for Primers and Boomers

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 173

People age, that's a proven and accepted fact. As we age, we tend to diminish our motor skills and our flexibility also decreases. However, there are still those who, despite their age, manage to outdo and even perform better than their young counterparts.

Individuals who are at the prime of their calendar age are usually still capable of working in the corporate world. Nonetheless, instances such as mass layoffs, sickness, or other personal activities may take them away from their corporate goal. Such absence in the field can make it difficult for them to return. This difficulty may be attributed to their age.

Age discrimination, like race and ethnicity discrimination, happens in the workplace. There are instances wherein hiring managers are hesitant to hire older applicants because they think that the presence of mature employees in the company can drive their healthcare costs up. Also, it is perceived that older applicants will demand higher rates compared with younger job seekers.

Age doesn't matter, does it?

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act or ADEA mandates companies and employers to hire individual aged 40 and above to work freely in the workplace. These individuals should be treated fairly and must receive the same healthcare package, salary, benefits, and retirement plans. Despite the presence the law, it still can't be avoided or proven if discrimination happens during the application screening process.

Although age should not be a measurement of an individual's capacity and work performance, some employers find it hard to hire "baby boomers" and individuals who are currently at the "prime" of their lives. Some employers believe that elderly applicants, when hired, would retire soon. This would leave the company at loss-their hiring and training expenses not fully recovered.

Thus, in order to escape the eyes of biased hiring managers, mature applicants must ensure that their application does not speak about their age. But how do you create an application document that places your qualifications in the spotlight?

How to make a resume: Two tips for elders

Here are reminders that mature job seekers can use when drafting their applications:

Keep your skills up-to-date. There's no better tell tale sign of your age than obsolete software programs, century-old skills, and outdated proficiencies. Thus, if you're serious about getting a job, you should be able to invest in your proficiencies. Look for programs, seminars, and trainings that provide up-to-date skills and information. This will not only upgrade your working efficiency, it will also show potential employers that "old dogs can still learn new and innovative tricks and skills."

Clean your document for outdated terms. In today's modern world, secretaries are now called "executive assistant." These little changes in the work description can put you at a disadvantage especially if a hiring manager scans your application. Applications should be then improved in order to ensure that your age doesn't show in your application. Keep it clean and free from obsolete job descriptions or positions.

These tips might appear as a no-brainer particularly to people who are out in the job market. Nonetheless, you might be surprised that there are, indeed, a few who fail to get job interviews because of their application documents. By knowing how to make a resume for mature job applicants, you can certainly dodge the discrimination ball thrown during the hiring process.
