Spotted Pig Restaurant Review

I'm a huge fan of the Spotted Pig located in the West Village in NYC. A gastro pub started by April Bloomfield the food is always flavorful and spot on. The problem is its tiny, they don't take reservations and the wait time can be insane.

Since it was Good Friday, and most Jews would be having Seder dinners with their families we figured if we showed up at 5:30PM on the dot we would be at the top of the list. WRONG I was there by 5:40 and put was close to the bottom of the list and a very languid hostess told me that we should be seated around 9:30PM. This is my biggest gripe with the Spotted Pig the flipping wait. Both bars were packed so we decided to come up with a game plan to decide where we were going to eat.

We sent the guys upstairs and they managed to snag a few stools where we ultimately wound up getting 4 and a section of the bar and decided to enjoy appetizers while debated what do about dinner.

Decided to go start with the Roasted Almonds, which had a great spicy kick to them. The Deviled eggs which are perfectly seasoned and floating in a pool of olive oil, and the Devils on Horseback which are yummy figs wrapped in bacon (bacon makes everything better). I washed it down with a sorrel punch, hibiscus, ginger, cinnamon, clove, lemon, sugar, vodka which was quite good.

We got the call at 7:30 that a table was available and were seated in the tight table for 6. (the restaurant only seats 100)

Since I couldn't decide what to eat since there were so many things on the plates portion of the menu that looked good a friend and I decided to order several of the small plates and split them.

Seared mackerel with sweet potato & pancetta mash - The skin on the mackerel was nice and crisp and the mash nicely flavored

Crispy Pigs Ear Salad - This was unbelievable. The ear was deeply fried and crispy. It was chewy and flavorful almost like a chewy pork rind/belly. I was almost tempted to order another one it was that good and half an ear wasn't enough. The green were lightly dressed with a lemon caper dressing

Sheep Milk Ricotta Gnudi with Brown Butter and Crispy Sage - This was not my favorite. The gnudi were puffy pillows of ricotta that didn't do it for me personally. It was almost too soft. I would have preferred a gnocchi which would have been great in the brown butter sauce

Prosciutto & Ricotta Tart with Marjoram - Another winner here. Flavorful and perfectly cooked

Char grilled Burger with Roquefort & Shoestrings - The burger here is really good. Flavorful with a heaping pile of shoestring fries perfectly fried you can't go wrong if you decide to go with this

We decided to order a few desserts to complete dinner

Warm Ginger Cake with Vanilla Ice cream - The ginger cake was dense and flavorful and my personal favorite

Hazelnut Ice Cream with Shortbread Cookies - The cookies were just eh. The ice cream went really well with the ginger cake.

It was a great meal. The wait is always a pet peeve of mine but I keep coming back. The food is just that good.
