Red Restaurant - Huntington, NY

July 01, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 224

"Red says city", New York Times says. Red Restaurant is a smallish ground floor building, with a surprisingly old-school European style door and two low windows adorned with red geraniums, at 47 New York Avenue in Huntington, New York. It has been there for over 20 years.

Besides Red Restaurant, there are 3 more venues that Kelley & Nino manages: the Sapsuckers, a prized "hops and grub" cheap restaurant, the rustic and Italian Osteria Da Nino, both on Huntington Main Street, and Cafe Red, which supplies hybrid menus with an Italian flair in Kings Park, New York. Except for the Sapsuckers, the other 3 venues also offer to organize parties. The company is named after Nino Antuzzi and Kelley Danek, the two owners. The head chief at Red is Orlando Gracia.

They are all small venues with a limited number of seats and a limited number of menus consisting mostly of popular dishes. This is a twofold choice. Such venues are successful only if everything is prepared with an extra amount of care and dedication. All four have websites, displaying Gallery, Menus and Press sections. The press articles are not all five stars, but they are thorough examinations from prestigious gastronomy expert reviewers. If this looks like a pretty straightforward approach, one look at the menus is enough to explain it all.

The Red site Menus section displays 6 subsections. Dinner (first and second course) is separated from Dessert, and you have the 3 types of drinks listed separately. Dinner is a list of menus with around 10 first course options - some of them typically Italian - and another 10 main course variants. Add to this the Risotto of the Day, the hand rolled Cavatelli Pasta and the spinach & ricotta ravioli, which are separately displayed. To whoever is into Mediterranean, this place is worth a try.

The Dessert subsection is rather generous, accounting for classical Anglo-Saxon hits as well as for top choices form different Mediterranean traditions. From Port wine to flavored tea, from the French creme brule to the Turkish sorbet, and from bread pudding to chocolate cake, it is definitely the part of the menu designed to give clients a hard time choosing. Like with all Italian restaurants, the home-made Gelato is a case of pride, and very inviting.

The Prix Fixe Menu of the week is listed separately, offering all 3 courses, with 3 variants for each course. The price is $32 per person; they don't offer take outs and don't allow swaps.

Overall, Red Restaurant is a place of hand selected food and organic ingredients worth a try. Or, as Peter M. Gianotti, from Newsday magazine, put it after he dined here, despite its name, and some less tasty than expected dishes, the overall quality of their supply is good and the place is "on the black".
