Restaurants Can Use HTML 5 For Their Mobile Online Ordering Systems

April 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 230

Mobile devices and technology are not new to restaurants. They have taken notice to the increasing amount of technology that surrounds and influences their business. MobiThinking stated that in 2011, 31.8 percent of handsets that were sold were smartphones. There were 234 million people age 13 and up who owned a mobile device in the United States according to the Inman News article "Number of smartphone users jumps 10%". These are outstanding numbers, but what restaurants need to learn is how their websites are changing just as fast as all these devices.

HTML 5 is a term that most people have heard, but very few know anything about. HTML is known as HyperText Markup Language and it is the language of the internet. All webpages and media online are created using this language. The newest form of this is the HTML 5. What is so great about this new language? HTML 5 allows for a variety of different upgraded resources for developers and makes for a better online experience for users.

One of the benefits of using HTML 5 is that it has replaced the need for plug-ins almost all together. When a user visits a page that has a video or picture, they usually have Flash or some other plug-in which allows them to view the media. Mobile devices are not set up to make use of these add-ons and therefore mobile users cannot take advantage of the photos and videos on their devices. HTML 5 allows a simple tag such as "video" or "audio" to be placed in the code which will in turn make photos and video available for mobile device users. Another plus is that videos and photos are in high resolution which makes for a better viewing experience. Photos can be put in galleries and even zoomed in on which makes it easier to see on the device's screen.

HTML 5 also makes the experience of viewing a webpage similar to that of viewing an app. The webpages are designed so users can flip through them just like they would an app. The benefit is that users do not have to search and download an app, but instead have the ability to just use the internet. Developers also use HTML 5 to make the pages have more engaging content for users. They can flip through pages, save information, and even use location awareness. Information is saved by the browser which makes it more convenient for users because then the page will remember specifics about them when they revisit it. Also, with location awareness, businesses can help their consumers find their location. Stores can make their site able to locate people and then, once they are logged in, tell them where the nearest store location is near them.

There are about 1.2 billion mobile web users in the world according to MobiThinking and in January 2012, 8.94 percent of website hits were from mobile devices. It is easy to see that people are buying and using their mobile devices more frequently to view online content. With the aid of HTML 5, restaurants have the ability to upgrade their sites, make them more engaging and easier to use, and eventually tap into the vast amount of potential customers using mobile devices.
