Restaurant Furniture Maintenance

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 219

There is no doubt about it: restaurant furniture takes a beating with extended and ongoing use, especially at a busy establishment, and a wise restaurateur won't neglect the upkeep of the furnishings with which the clientele will come into closest contact. A grubby-looking table or booth is extremely off-putting to a diner--and while the daily cleaning and disinfecting goes without saying, it's also important to address deeper issues regarding the state of repair of a restaurant's furnishings. Consider these tips for maintenance of the furnishings for a restaurant, and those furnishings will remain serviceable for a much longer life.

Vinyl seat finishes are extremely durable, but still need regular cleaning and disinfecting, as well as periodic deep cleaning. A damp cloth applied immediately after a spill will prevent dirt or foods from hardening on the vinyl, which can scratch even the durable finish of a vinyl seat. For a deep cleaning, use soapy water and rinse with a clean-water cloth. Avoid using oil, which actually causes the vinyl to harden and ultimately to crack.

Wooden table tops and seats require careful maintenance to keep them in sharp condition. Frequent cleaning with a soft dry or barely damp cloth is recommended, and servers should make a habit of lifting items from the table top when repositioning them, rather than sliding items across the wood and risking scratches. A furniture polish designed for wooden surfaces should be applied regularly to maintain water resistance and heighten their sheen, and hot pads or place-mats should be used with hot dishes. If the restaurant features candles, place the candles on trays or candle stands to catch dripping wax, and consider a UV protective cover if tables will be in direct sunlight. Of course, tablecloths are also a cost-effective way to protect tables and maintain a classy ambiance; the laundry bill is likely to be less expensive than replacing tables for wear and tear.

In maintaining patio restaurant furniture, try car or metal wax on aluminum furnishings, or UV upholstery protection on vinyls or plastics. When the patio furnishings aren't in use, make a habit of keeping them covered or bringing them indoors to protect from water damage and UV damage over time.

Taking the time to follow these fairly simple maintenance tips will extend the usable life of restaurant furniture and keep the clientele happy with the cleanliness and ambiance of the establishment in all.
