They can therefore eat vegetables, fruits, insects and some small animals. You should therefore offer your dragon a wide range of insects that include; cockroaches, crickets, earthworms, beetles, slugs, moths and spiders. Appropriate vegetables include; dandelion, spinach, Chinese greens zucchini, broccoli, sweet potato, carrots and beans. Suitable fruits include apples, bananas and melon. It is important to note that there are nutritionally balanced pellets in the market that offer alternative balanced diets.

Bearded dragons are best kept as captive reptiles. This means that they should be kept enclosure however they must be allowed to behave as if they are in the wild. An enclosed housing measuring anything from 120cm by 60cm should be adequate to house one to three adult reptiles. The housing should include plenty of branches as well as multiple hiding areas that act as artificial caves. The housing should also include a water source for drinking and soaking. It is important to note that housings for bearded dragons are readily available in pet stores therefore you don't have to suffer making one on your own.

Disease prevention tips

These tips are important basic tips for the first time bearded dragon owner. The best way of preventing diseases is by maintaining high hygiene standards in the bearded dragon's housing. Regular visits to veterinary also help in ensuring that your bearded lizard remains healthy. A bearded dragon owner should also be aware about possible signs of sickness such as incomplete shedding, change in the color of scales, inactivity and poor feeding habits.

Lighting tips

It is important to note that bearded dragons require very high intensities of ultra violet light. The best way for a bearded dragon owner to offer high UV light is by using a fluorescent lamp that has been designed specifically for reptile use. The fluorescent light should be fitted within 60cm because any UV light emitted can only penetrate effectively within this range. There should be no Perspex or glass between the dragon and the light because this will filter all the UV light that is intended for the dragon. Lastly it is important to note that the dragon required 8 to 10 hours of UV light daily.

Heating tips

Lastly, it is important for the first time dragon owner to known about the dragon's heat requirements because like any other reptile, the dragon is cold blooded. It therefore can't regulate its own body temperature and has to rely on its surrounding to maintain its body temperature. It is therefore crucial that there be an area in its housing where the dragon can heat up to allow for thermoregulation. It is also advisable for the first time owner to maintain a temperature map to be able to monitor the dragon's heating needs.
