Camper Trailer Safety

July 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

A camper trailer can provide some of the best family holidays and give you real freedom to go wherever you want and to stay wherever you want without spending a fortune on hotels and transport. Quite simply you are combining the two, and bringing them with you, meaning that at any point you can pull over and sleep the night.

However at the same time driving with a camper trailer can also make driving more difficult and it's very important to make sure that you stay aware of the fact that you have a camper trailer when driving and take the necessary precautions to stay safe when you're on the road and particularly when you are on the motorway. This way you can enjoy the many benefits of a camper trailer without incidence.

Trailer Maintenance

The first thing to consider when maintaining your camper trailer is the lights. Like your car itself, your camper trailer will have lights to help ensure people can see it easily on the road and to thus avoid them driving into it. Because your trailer attached to the back of your car, it's easy for a light to go and for you not to notice for a long time, and this can then end up in someone going into the back of you (bear in mind that the camper trailer also blocks out the lights on the back of your car).

As such then it's important to make sure that you check your camper trailer lights as often as you check them for your car and before every long journey. You should also make sure to check the lights after any bumps, as cracks in the casing of your lights can blind drivers behind you. Finally you should also make sure when going abroad that you get the correct covers for the lights if you are driving on the other side of the road.

Likewise your trailer will also need its tires pumping up from time to time, and this can otherwise make the trailer slow to respond.

When driving with a trailer it is vital to remember that it is there at all times. This sounds obvious, but it's surprisingly easy to forget and to hurtle around a corner. Likewise it can also be all too easier to stop suddenly forgetting the trailer is there. If necessary, use a visual reminder in the car so that you stay aware of the trailer.

Meanwhile make sure that you drive taking this into account and that means driving in the slow lane on the motorway as well as trying to keep your distance from other traffic by hanging back using 'defensive driving'. You must also remember that it will take you longer to stop when you break on the motorway - if you remember your Newtonian laws of physics then this is simply because you will have more mass which means you will have more momentum.

You also need to account for your reduced visibility and you might find that it helps to get an extra mirror to help you see around the trailer.
