Tips for Remodeling Your Home on a Budget

July 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 162

Most homeowners dream of remodeling their house at one point or another, but few can afford significant renovations. If you think your home needs an update, but you can't afford a complete overhaul, it doesn't mean you should give up altogether. You might not be able to do major renovations, but you can redecorate your home and make it feel new and exciting. Making small changes can give you big results if you have some free time to take on remodeling projects on your own. With a little creativity and a few simple affordable remodeling tips, you can slowly transform your house into your dream home.

Come Up With a Budget

Every remodeling project needs a budget even if you don't plan on making any big changes. Knowing what you can afford makes it easier to plan your project efficiently and avoid spending more money than you can afford. When you know how much you can spend, you can focus on buying home improvement products and decorations that are in your price range. It can help you save both time and money.

Decide what's Important to You

Depending on the budget you come up with, you might have to limit your remodeling project to one or a few specific spaces in your home. It's important to look at your house from both an aesthetic and a practical point of view. If you have appliances that need to be replaced, you might have to wait until you can afford the modern interior design makeover you've always wanted. Many homeowners who have a small budget choose to do cosmetic remodeling even if their home's structure or appliances need to be updated. This can turn into a very costly mistake, especially if your house needs repairs now. Making ongoing minor repairs is cheaper in the long run than dealing with major damage that could've been prevented with regular upkeep.

Do a Little at a Time

The easiest way to make a big remodeling project more affordable is to split it up into different phases. If you create a detailed plan, you can easily separate it based on what you can afford to spend each month or two months. For example, if you love the way modern interior design looks but currently have a traditional home you can complete your remodeling project by buying one new piece of furniture or artwork every few months. As long as you have a specific plan and goal in mind, you can build your dream home slowly by purchasing one thing at a time.

Get Creative

Remodeling doesn't necessarily have to mean purchasing new items for your home. You can make your remodeling project a success without spending a lot of money by updating the furniture and appliances you already own. Home improvement stores carry dozens of products that can be used to refresh or completely transform different areas in your house. You can refinish your furniture and make it look brand new or re-stain your hardwood floors. There are countless possibilities for making small remodeling changes that provide big results as long as you are willing to try. Many homeowners never get up the nerve to do their own remodeling because they aren't sure how to do it and hiring help is too expensive. Doing small renovations is easier than you might think. It helps to have someone with experience by your side; but there are plenty of books and videos you can use for instructions and guidance if you want to handle everything on your own.
