Home Improvement Hazards to Avoid

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 111

Home improvement projects are a fantastic way to increase the value of your home and make your home a more enjoyable place to live, however, they do not always go as planned. Before you assemble your tools and map out your plans for your next project, consider the following mistakes and how to avoid them.

The Nuts and Bolts of Home Improvement: Avoiding Common Hazards

  • Over-expanding - One of the first and most common mistakes you may fall prey to when you are starting home improvement projects is going overboard when renovating. When you over-expand, you will tend to add on more features to your home than you really need to live in it. With over-expanding, the project will not only cost more, but the utilities will increase and additional money will be needed to ensure the home's fire safety. If you are going to be over-expanding your home, make sure you will be living in the home for years to come so you can receive a full return on your investment.
  • Changing Architecture - How do you want to improve your home? Would you like to expand your living room? Build a bathroom off your master bedroom? Knock out the wall between two small rooms to make one large room? Be careful when making drastic changes to the general architecture of your home. If you plan on selling the home in the near future, buyers may not be as susceptive to your changes as you think. If the remodel sounds strange, it probably is. For instance, while you may want another bathroom on the first level of your home, turning the coat closet into a half bath is not a solution. It will always feel like a small, cramped closet, not a bathroom. In addition, knocking out walls can also be dangerous, because some may house electric wires and essential fasteners and bolts, or they may be load-bearing walls, meaning they hold up your roof. Always talk to a licensed contractor first.
  • Do-It-Yourself vs. Contractor - Before you start playing around with industrial fasteners, take a step back and consider whether the project is really a do-it-yourself project or whether it should be done by a contractor. If you are building a bookshelf, fixing a leaky faucet, or replacing your carpet, you don't need a professional. However, if the job is bigger than that, consider hiring a contractor. He or she will be able to complete the job safely and make sure the work is done according to your residential codes.
  • Under-Budgeting - While having enough money to complete your project is essential, this is not only what we are referring to when we say "under-budgeting." This term also refers to the time it takes for the home improvement project to be completed. How long do you want your home to remain in disarray? If the project interferes with how you live your daily life in your home, you will want it done as quickly as possible. This is another reason why hiring a contractor is important for larger projects. They know how to stay on schedule and can provide you with an estimated time for when your project will be complete, down to when the last bolt fastener will be used.

Home improvement projects can be an excellent way to improve the quality of life in your home and increase your home's value. Just make sure you avoid these common renovating hazards to ensure a successful project.
