Getting Ready for a Kitchen Remodel

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Over the past few weeks, you have been discussing and finalizing the plans for your kitchen remodel. You started by flipping through magazines and browsing the Internet to get ideas of what you wanted. After you had a good idea of the finished product that you were looking for, you researched and screened contractors until you found one that was perfect for the job. After discussing your plans, and coming up with a final design, you accepted the contractors bid and set the date. Although you are almost finished, there are still many things to be done before your contractor arrives at your home. As the date approaches, take these steps to make everything easier on both you and your contractor.

1. Gather Frequently Used Items - This includes your coffee pot, mixing bowls, can openers, silverware, dishes, cups and anything else that you use on a daily basis. While your kitchen is being remodeled, you will still need to use these items. Keep them organized in an easy to reach place so that you do not find yourself searching for them. Don't forget essentials such as trash bags, aluminum foil and storage bags.

2. Organize Your Food - Pack your canned goods, boxed food and oils into boxes with low sides so that you can keep them organized and find things easily throughout the process.

3. Pack Away Infrequently Used Items - Make a box or two for all of the things that you do not use very often. During the remodel, pack these away in your garage or basement so that they do not get in the way.

4. Get Rid of Unneeded Items - While you are packing up your infrequently used items, make a special box for donation. Consider whether or not you are actually going to use the item again, or if it makes sense just to get rid of it altogether. Use your remodel as a chance to clear your kitchen of unnecessary items and reduce clutter.

5. Organize Silverware - One of the easiest ways to organize your eating utensils is to place them in large storage bags. These are easy to access, easy to see and very simple to unpack.

6. Pack Carefully - This goes without saying. Whenever you are packing your breakable items such as glassware and dinnerware, make sure that you pack them as carefully as possible. Use newspaper or bubble wrap to protect them while they are in storage.

7. Protect Valuables From Dust - Before the remodel starts, remove all decorations, blinds and curtain rods. You should also cover any computers, televisions or other electronics to prevent them from being damaged by dust.

Once you are fully prepared for your kitchen remodel, you can let your general contractor take care of the rest of the work. Although it will take some time getting used to living your home with only a partially available kitchen, following the above steps will help ensure that your kitchen remodeling company can quickly and easily finish your job within the desired timeframe.
