Relevance or Reverence?

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 248

The Holy Spirit is a hot topic on the Christian debate list. But would you say this is really the purpose of the Holy Spirit? God never gave us the Holy Spirit to keep discussion threads going. This has led to many opinions that are based on man's opinion and interpretation of scripture rather than being founded on truths that are sourced from the experience of relationship with the Spirit. The truth is; as along as Christians continue to approach their faith in God from an intellectual platform, they will get caught up in cold religion.

We aren't supposed to approach God as a religion, making Him a concept! To the contrary, mankind is invited to draw near to God through the channel of personal relationship. There is a vast gap between relationship and religion. One gets you stuck in the law of tradition while the other liberates you in the principles of faith.

While Christians engage on the battlefield of human reasoning, the dimension and role of the Holy Spirit is lost in their daily walk with God. The time we have spent as Christians to embark on the labyrinth of relevance, has left us luke-warm and stale. We should really start talking less and rather put our energy into living what we claim to believe.

The question we have to ask ourselves is; Is the Holy Spirit a matter of relevance or reverence? As long as we walk down the road of relevance, we will inhibit the work of the Spirit in our lives. Relevance is a matter of opinion which provokes reasoning and raises differences between people. We can spend worthless hours discussing His relevance or allow one step of faith to eliminate all our doubts and erase the grey haze that clouds our connection with Him

We have to abandon the territory of our stinking thinking and allow our lives to become permeated with reverence for the Holy Spirit. In this case it's no longer a matter of fact but a journey in which one chooses to embrace faith. You stop trying to convince yourself why you have to do something and just get down to daring to believe. The challenge is to take God and His Word for who He really is. It's in this moment that you are struck with the reality of a real God, that you discover relationship with Him through His Holy Spirit.
