Are Your Clothes Modest If They Are Tight?

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

With the popularity of Lycra, Spandex and Elastane, many clothing retailers have stocked their inventory with stretchy clothing made with these materials. You can easily spot these clothing marketed as layering shells, tops, skirts and dresses. However, when the wearer goes out with a tight garment, is she reflecting a modest attitude? Since when is tight clothing considered modest?

According to many faiths with modesty requirements, tight clothing when worn on a woman or girl is not modest at all. The fact that tight clothing reveals the physical shape of the female wearer, it attracts undue attention rather than subdues it. Judaism has a dress code based on Jewish modesty laws that prohibits tight clothing. It requires that Jewish women and girls wear clothing that have a modest fit. This translates to semi-fitted and loose-fitting garments to be considered kosher. Islam and other faiths, including LDS, forbid tight clothing on their female adherents.

In recent months, the Meriden public school in Connecticut made the headlines recently in March 2012, with a consideration to ban tight clothing from being worn in school, as it believes such clothing disrupts the education process from taking place. It is understandable that private schools have the freedom to impose dress regulations on its students. However, does a public school which is funded through taxpayer money have the right to impose any dress code on its student populace?

The Ohio State Bar Association writes that schools do have an obligation to provide a healthy education environment for its students and this includes removing any obstacle that disrupts the education process. In doing so, it can enforce regulations including appropriate dress codes that prohibits suggestive clothing such as tight clothing and short skirts among the female students. Other conspicuous clothing include those bearing symbols with an affiliation to a gangster movement, bulky clothing that may pose a safety hazard to the wearer, and clothing reflecting a high financial status of the wearer.

Many public schools have implemented appropriate dress requirements for its students. Public schools with published dress codes accessible on the Internet include Forestwood Middle School, Anderson Mill, and Langley-Bath Clearwater Middle School. It is therefore universally accepted that tight clothing is a distraction in every day society independent of one's faith.

Even though modest clothing may be harder to find in the majority of clothing retail stores today, it is praiseworthy though to take up sewing to learn how to make your own clothing. In addition, you may also purchase clothing from a growing number of modest clothing retailers out there.
