Hobbies And Ham Radio

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 175

Most kids of today are sadly quite substantially absorbed in their own worlds of violent video games, dull and misinformation on TV shows and everyday celebrity worshipping. They tend to not spend much time with their families anymore and rather do their own things, which quite saddens many a caring and loving parent, as they certainly want to see their child grow up and keep them company all along the way.

As most hobbies that kids like to pursue today generally involve nothing more than a joystick or a mouse and keyboard, other people are either not needed to give entertainment, or they are on another computer on the other side of the planet. Back in ye old days, families would spend long afternoons together playing round after round of Monopoly or Scrabble, but it seems like all that has gotten lost in the whirling pool of First Person Shooters.

Some hobbies that kids may take part in, like flying a kite, fishing or even playing the guitar, often begin and evolve with and through a mentor of some kind, and more often than not, it is the child's father who prides himself in having been an part of his offspring's learning process. So it is no wonder when a dad chooses to let his child partake in a diverse hobby like being a HAM-radio operator.

As I mentioned in an earlier article, the long way down the adventurous path of an amateur radio broadcaster begins with passing an examination on all sorts of things HAM related, like the concepts of radio propagation, electronics and bandwidth properties, followed by the 'radio young 'un' finding a mentor and teacher, a so-called Elmer. What better way for a caring parent to connect with their child again, than to introduce them to global radio communications, and teaching them the aspects of it along the way?

There are also a great number of events such as field days all over the world, where HAM's of all sizes and ages get together and practice emergency preparedness, for cases of natural or man made disasters, where conventional satellite phones may become useless for long-range communications due to a lack of reception or other factors. Field days also offer people new to the hobby the great opportunity to get some hand-on experience with radios, overseen by experienced hobbyists.

As the world keeps getting overloaded by bland and mentally non-challenging activities, a few pursuits remain creatively demanding and fostering technical expertise. Operating an amateur radio under your own call sign is one of them. From building your own radio tower, over passing on years of knowledge and experience to the next generation of HAM's, to talking with other human beings in strange and wonderful parts of the planet for hours on end, it may just be the time to replace your boy's x-box with a radio station, and hours of shooting zombies with endless broadcasting fun.
