The Truth About Publishing A Novel

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

No matter how well you write, there are barriers to getting published. Typically, a published novel has been vetted not only by an agent, but also by one or more editors. As a writer, you are subject to the whims of these complete strangers who often want to tear your work to pieces. Even previously published writers are often asked to go back and rewrite portions of their book, to cut details away in order to make it fit within the prescribed guidelines set forth by the publishing house. In a few cases, writers are even told to start writing the book again from scratch. Even when a writer finally makes all these corrections in order to satisfy an editor, there is still a significant chance that the publisher will decide at the last minute to drop the book altogether.

Did you really become a writer to deal with all of these frustrations? Probably not. Fortunately, there are better alternatives than the traditional publishing route. The good news is that traditional publishers are losing ground and becoming more irrelevant with each passing year as more writers decide to publish their own works using The Kindle and other similar devices.

Yes, you can publish your novel and have it available to readers in a matter of minutes. The bad news, however, is that the Kindle and Nook marketplace are overwhelmed with new novels from previously unpublished authors. So while you are more free than ever to publish your ideas or stories, marketing is required in order to reach a wider reading audience.

There are two ways of doing this. You can either hire a company to do the work for you at a price or you can do the work all by yourself. Unfortunately, the process of successfully marketing a book is very time consuming and will often take away from your writing time. As all writers know, it is necessary to produce fiction each and every day, even if you're only writing one hundred words or less. So you don't want to spend all your waking hours marketing a book. If possible, finding a trusted company for that job is your best bet. Prices range from less than a hundred dollars to thousands of dollars each month.

With compelling, well-written novels, the cost of marketing is often small. Once those first dozen or so readers finish the book and tell their friends about it, the popularity of the novel increases as more people discover it. With this in mind, you want to first focus on the craft of writing even before you consider self publication or traditional publication. A large marketing budget can't overcome the deficiencies of a poorly written novel. You can see how this happens when established authors produce a failed novel. In this case, there is often a rush for initial orders but then the book flounders after negative reviews start surfacing. Readers are a picky bunch and they stick together. That is great when you write something that is entertaining or revolutionary, but bad when the novel is lame and tiresome. So focus on becoming a better writer first. After that, success will follow.
