Here are the five important errors you should avoid.

1. Poor writing quality

Whenever you start writing, especially when it is a subject that's important to you, it is easy to make mistakes in your use of English, punctuation, spelling or typographical errors. For example, the initial pages of your book must have certain information such as the title, author, copyright, dates of publication, ISBN and other material. The format of this is quite easy to see from almost any book that you pick up. So it is important for the professional appearance of your publication for all this to be on the correct pages and correctly formatted. If you are uncertain anything about this layout and its information then consult a professional editor, it is too important to neglect.

2. Book Structure

Your readers will expect your book to be organized by chapters regardless of the content. Technical, informational or instruction books will benefit form a more detailed breakdown into sections or sub-chapters. Providing a recognized structure helps to make your book easy to read and understand so your reader will want to recommend it to others.

3. Consistency

The 'Cinderella' of publishing. If you are writing a piece of fiction then the carrying forwards consistent characteristics, whether of place or person, is important or else your reader will get very confused. If your publication is of a more technical nature then consistent use of fonts, and their variations, is important for helping the reader to understand the various parts of your book's information.

4. Appearance & Layout

The design of your book is helpful in establishing its position in the market as well as making it easy for the reader. Most books will be standard paperbacks - 7.8" by 5.1"/ 197mm x 130mm in size and yours should be too. Book buyers have shelves for books of that size and so your should fit the pattern - unless there's a special reason. One reason may be that yours is intended to be a regular reference book in which case it can be larger and with a hard back.

Then, particularly with the paperback market, there is the cover design. If you are producing a series then there should be consistency in design, otherwise the design should reflect some aspect of the subject matter or genre.

5. Marketing and promotion plan
