How to Design EBooks

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

An eBook is one of the most popular forms of sellable digital content because they are easier to create compared to other forms. Music formats like MP3 files sell like hotcakes but you need to master advanced digital audio workstation software if you want to produce pieces that are worth selling.

eBooks, on the other hand, focuses more on the content. Once you are confident enough in creating good content that can keep readers interested, your next step is to design eBooks that will give potential buyers a good impression of the content you are trying to present.

Things to Do:

eBook covers are the first thing to focus on if you want to design eBooks in an organized manner. It's up to you if you want to finalize the content first or get the cover out of the way.

You can design the cover in such a way that it summarizes the content. If you design the cover first, your future content should support the cover.

Good artistic abilities can help you design eBooks that really stand out. You can learn how to use professional design applications like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign so you can apply your creative artistic talent to computers. Otherwise, you can search for an online service or tool that lets you create a custom eBook cover by following a series of simple steps.

The most common file format for eBooks is the PDF format which is an Adobe format. Adobe InDesign is an ideal program for creating eBooks since you can set various page options and export the eBook to PDF. Adobe InCopy can help you write content and it integrates tightly with Adobe InDesign.

Things to Avoid:

Many free online tools may help you design eBooks but often disappoint because of the limited options. Your eBook should stand out from the rest of those generic designs.

There are tons of eBooks being sold online right now and people have short attention spans when it comes to online browsing. Design your eBook well and you will more likely improve your sales and conversion rate. It's better to find a downloadable application because they provide more options such as 3D effects for your eBook.

Design an Attractive Cover:

It's true that people shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the reality is that most people still do and you have to adapt by trying to design eBooks with attractive covers.

Finding a dedicated designing application lets you set aside the technical stuff so you can focus more on bringing your eBook design concepts and ideas to life.

The effort is worthwhile because you end up with an eBook that looks distinctively different than other eBooks targeting similar audiences.
