How to Increase Confidence and Speak Up in Class

People are afraid of so many things, but of all the fears in the world, the fear of public speaking ranks right at the top of the list. It is normal for new students or shy ones to be unable to speak up in class. To help you be able to increase you confidence level and speak up in class, here are a number of tips that will surely be of assistance to you:

First, raise your hand, and do not just interrupt others while they are giving their thoughts. Raising your hand, on the most part, raises your confidence and shows that you are respectful of others and their right to communicate their opinions.

Secondly, it is important to give comments that are related with what is being said. Making random comments in the middle of conversations is not wise. Make comments that are explicitly related to the conversation at hand.

Thirdly, do not pretend that you know some facts, when in actual fact that you do not. It is good to speak up in class, but it is not amusing when you just speak out of turn, make comments that are not verifiable or are downright false. It is not impressive to anyone when you give comments out of topic.

Fourthly, you should try and speak. As obvious as it seems, try and get your voice out on a matter in class. It may seem hard to be able to participate in class, but the first time is always the hardest. Try it, and with time it will be much better.

Fifthly, it is okay to express an unpopular opinion. Do not be afraid to speak out and give your thoughts, even if it seems that many are not of that school of thought. Just because, they have not yet spoken does not mean that they do not agree with you. You may actually find that you have spoken what many of the class members want to say but are afraid of saying out. You may actually earn the respect of many in class, as you have spoken out and spoken clearly.

Sixthly, realize the fact that the act of speaking out in class is actually a learning experience. When you speak in class, you will find it much easier to participate more in joint class projects, brainstorming activities. It will also assist you be more participatory during meetings at your workplace later in life. Get learning, and soon decisions will be made only after your highly valued opinion has been aptly heard.

Seventhly, remember that you can always speak to the moderator in private about your discomfort regarding public participation. This may help him understand how to make you get engaged in the question. More often than not, he will be understanding and assist you to become more comfortable with participating.

Lastly, it is important to realize that you are part of a community or society and it is your right and responsibility to speak up and give your opinion. If you do not participate, you are failing in fulfilling this responsibility and you are not contributing to solving a problem.

These tips should and will help you speak up in class if you regard them well.
